Chapter 6 - The Long Road to Redemption

The words hung in the air. "For real this time."

My mother sat down on a garden bench, as if her legs could no longer support her. My father, who had been guarding the card box, just stared. I felt Daniel’s grip on my hand tighten. We had been through enough drama for one afternoon. This had to be another part of the con, another layer of Madison's deception.

"I know what you're thinking," Madison said, her eyes welling with real tears now. She looked around the decimated party, at the cake topper in the vanilla frosting. "You think I'm lying. Again. I don't blame you."

She walked over and carefully handed the paper to my father. He read it, his brows furrowing. My mother stood and came to his side. She put on her glasses and looked at the document. "Laboratory results... positive... HCG count... it looks real, Henry."

"I... I can't," my father said, his voice choking up. He looked at Madison with a mix of deep exhaustion and a flicker of something new—hope, maybe, but a very cautious one. "This doesn't erase what you did today, Madison. The lies. The fraud. The trying to steal $75k from your family."

"I know," Madison whispered, her face streaked with tears and dirt from where she had been forced to the ground. "It was Leo. I mean, it was my idea, but he helped. I was just so desperate. I didn't think I could ever be a real mother, and I just... I wanted that perfect picture. I wanted the respect and the money and... and I thought once I had it, I could just figure out the rest. It was a stupid, terrible mistake."

"Mistake isn't the word, Madison," I said, my voice quiet but firm. "This was planned. Over months. You put Daniel and me in the middle of it. You lied to everyone who loves you."

Madison nodded, the weight of her actions evident in her posture. She was stripped of her fake belly, of her performance. She looked small and lost. "I understand. I don't expect you to forgive me. Not yet. I don't know if you ever will."

The representative from the Westbrook Women's Clinic stepped forward again. "The evidence of fraud has been secured. Our priority was to stop the theft of funds from your family. That has been accomplished. The documents from this envelope will be provided to the appropriate authorities for investigation regarding the use of forged documents."

Everyone turned back to Madison. The reality of legal trouble was setting in.

"But," the nurse continued, her voice gaining a gentler tone. "We can also confirm that the laboratory results I gave Madison are real and came directly from our clinic. We have a medical record for her. She is expecting."

My parents exchanged a look of pure emotional exhaustion. They had just lost $75k to fraud and their daughter’s trust had been shattered. Now, they were potentially getting a grandchild, but the circumstances were nightmarish.

Daniel squeezed my hand. "It’s a fresh start, Em. A very, very complicated one. But maybe it's the start she needs to fix herself."
