Chapter 4 - The Price of Silence

The entire backyard seemed to hold its collective breath. The blue balloons still danced on their strings, the vanilla cake still filled the air with its aroma, but the world had shifted. The official in navy scrubs watched me, her gaze steady, her hand extended.
Madison was now crying, not in sorrow, but in sheer, raw terror. "You don't understand! She's lying! I am pregnant, it’s just..." Her words were a jumbled mess.
"You need to be silent, Madison," the clinic representative said, her tone cutting. She didn't look at Daniel or me. She only had eyes for Madison. "This situation is far beyond what you think."
My parents were statues of disbelief. My father’s video camera was still running, recording every single second. Daniel was beside me, his hand still slightly shaking on my arm, but his expression was resolute.
"What is this, Daniel?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "Did you know she was faking it?"
Daniel glanced at the nurse. "I knew about the prosthetic. I only just got the confirmation about the money." He nodded toward the envelope in my hand. "That’s what this whole thing was about. Madison and our cousin, Leo. They’ve been planning this for months."
Leo? I hadn't seen Leo in the backyard. I scanned the area and saw him. He was trying to slink away through the hedges by the garage. When he saw me, he froze.
"Westbrook Women’s Clinic?" I looked back at the woman in scrubs. "Is that where Madison's obstetrician was?"
The clinic representative took a step toward me. "My job is to secure that envelope. It’s evidence in a federal fraud investigation. Madison has been using falsified medical records from our clinic to obtain funds under pretense."
Fraud. Federal. These words did not belong in my parents' backyard. They didn't fit with the customized ice sculpture that was currently sweating on the buffet table next to a massive turkey. (Referencing the scene in image_0.png, the massive feast.)
The food, the party, the gifts... they were all paid for by lies. The cards for Madison and her ‘emergency fund.’ The entire celebration was a stage set for a robbery. Madison looked wildly around the backyard, searching for an exit, but my husband and father were blocking her path.
The woman in scrubs stepped closer to me, her hand outstretched. "The documents in that envelope will detail the entire scheme. Including a confession from Leo."
"A confession?" I asked, looking between the envelope and my cousin, who was still trying to escape.

"He was the one who was supposed to intercept the information. He got nervous," the woman explained. "When we threatened to file charges, he wrote a statement about how they were faking the pregnancy to get your parents to sign over the emergency fund, and that they planned to use that money to start a property development business in Florida. The rest of the checks from guests were just a bonus."
Everyone turned to Madison. The powder-blue queen was gone. In her place was a con artist who had been discovered. My parents, after the initial shock, now looked not sad, but incredibly weary. They had spent thousands to help their daughter, and it had all been for a fake life and a fraudulent plan.
