Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The blaring fire alarm threw the entire building into chaos. Strobing white lights illuminated the sleek,
dark corridors of the executive floor. Elara ran back to the server terminal, grabbing the USB drive just as the
progress bar hit 100%. She shoved it into her pocket, heart racing as she heard the heavy footsteps of security
personnel echoing from the elevator lobby.
"Elara, the stairwells are locked down by the fire system!" Julian shouted through the earpiece over the
din of the alarms. "You have to use the service elevator on the east wing. It runs on a separate generator
backup. Go, go, go!"
Elara darted down the east corridor, but as she rounded the corner to the service bay, she ran straight into
a figure standing in the strobe-lit darkness.
It was Clara.
Her mother was dressed in a sleek, black trench coat, her hair perfectly coiffed, her face a mask of cold,
absolute fury. Behind her stood two of her personal security operatives. She looked at Elara’s short hair, then
at the USB drive sticking slightly out of her pocket.
"You really are your brother's daughter," Clara said, her voice easily cutting through the noise of the
sirens. "Always believing in some grand, righteous truth. But truth is a luxury for the weak, Elara. Power is
the only thing that endures."
"You killed him, Clara," Elara said, her voice rising above the alarm. "You let the facility burn because
you wanted the insurance money to cover your bad investments. You framed Julian, and you destroyed our
family. All for a name. All for money."
Clara laughed, a cold, dry sound. "I saved this family! If I hadn't let that facility go, the safety violations
would have leaked, the stock would have plummeted, and we would have been bankrupt. Leo was going to
ruin us. He wouldn't listen to reason. Just like you."
Clara stepped closer, her eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. "But it ends tonight. The police are
already on their way, Elara. They have a warrant for your arrest for grand theft and corporate espionage. I have
David's signed statement claiming you stole his keycard and manipulated him. You’re going to a secure
psychiatric facility, and Julian Vance is going to prison for life."
"No, he's not," Elara said, pulling her phone from her back pocket. She held up the screen, showing an
active, high-definition live-stream. "The fire alarm didn't just trigger the sirens, Clara. It triggered the

building’s emergency broadcast protocol. I bypassed the system. Every word you just said was streamed live
to over fifty thousand viewers, including the local news networks and the federal investigators who were
already watching your accounts."
Clara’s face drained of color. She looked at her security operatives, then back at Elara, realizing for the
first time that she had lost. The veneer of control was completely shattered.
"You... you wouldn't," Clara whispered, her voice trembling.
"I would," Elara said, her voice filled with a powerful, calm triumph. "The truth is out, Mother. And there
May you like
is nothing left for you to cut."
