Chapter 6 - A Price for Everything

The safehouse was a dusty, forgotten loft above a disused auto-body shop. Julian was waiting, pacing the

floor surrounded by monitors displaying financial charts, legal documents, and blueprints of the old research

facility. When the door opened and Elara walked in, Julian stopped dead in his tracks.

His eyes scanned her new, short hair, and a wave of raw fury and pain washed over his face. "She did this

to you," he whispered, stepping forward to gently touch the edge of her collarbone where the hair used to fall.

"I am so sorry, Elara. I should have protected you."

"I don't need protection anymore," Elara said, looking him dead in the eye. "I need justice. Look what I

found." She placed Leo's diary on the table.

Julian’s hands trembled as he opened the book. As he read Leo’s final entries, the puzzle pieces they had

been chasing for five years finally fell into place. "This is it," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "Leo

documented the exact serial numbers of the faulty valves Clara refused to replace. He even recorded her

conversations where she admitted she would rather let the facility burn than lose her investors. This is the

smoking gun."

Suddenly, Maya’s phone buzzed. She looked at the screen, her face draining of color. "Elara... look at

this."

She handed the phone over. Clara had released a statement to the press, accompanied by a beautifully

edited video. In the video, Clara stood in Elara's bedroom, looking distraught. "My daughter, Elara, has

suffered a severe psychological breakdown following the anniversary of her brother's tragic passing. She has

fled our home in a state of delusion, accompanied by Julian Vance, a man with a history of unstable behavior.

We are desperately appealing to the public for her safe return so she can receive the medical treatment she

urgently needs."

"She’s pre-empting us," Julian said, his jaw tightening. "She's framing your escape as a mental

breakdown so that when we present this evidence, she can claim we manipulated you or that you're not in your

right mind."

Before they could formulate a plan, the sound of a heavy door slamming downstairs echoed through the

loft. Julian immediately grabbed a burner phone, signaling Maya and Elara to hide behind a partition.

"Someone’s here," he whispered.

But the person who climbed the stairs wasn't a police officer or one of Clara's guards. It was David.

He looked broken, his expensive coat rumpled, his eyes bloodshot. He held up his hands to show he was

unarmed. "Elara, please. Don't run. I know you're here."

Elara stepped out from behind the partition, Julian close behind her. "How did you find us, David? Did

you bring Clara’s men?"

"No," David said, his voice cracking. "I came alone. I tracked Maya’s car. Elara... you have to listen to

me. Clara is going to announce the merger of the Hope Initiative with a global conglomerate tomorrow

morning. If the merger goes through, all her past financial records will be absorbed and sealed forever. You

will never be able to prove anything. She’s paying off the local police to find you. They are tracing this area

right now."

"Why are you telling us this?" Elara asked, suspicious of his sudden change of heart.

David looked down, a heavy tear escaping his eye. "Because I loved Leo. And I love you, Elara. I was a

coward for five years because Clara threatened to destroy my own children from my first marriage if I ever

spoke up. But when I saw her cut your hair... when I saw the look in her eyes, I realized she will never stop.

She will destroy you just like she destroyed Leo. I can't live with that anymore. I brought you the master keys

to the main server room at the corporate headquarters. That's where the backup physical financial ledgers are

kept. Clara thinks she deleted them, but I made a copy."

He handed Elara a small, black USB drive and a keycard. "There’s a price for everything, Elara. My

career, my reputation, my marriage—it's all over after tonight. But I want to do the right thing. Please, stop

May you like

her."
