The Child Behind the Fortune

Chapter 03 - The Child Behind the Fortune

The police identified the fake guard as a private contractor who had worked for Celeste before. He claimed he had only been hired to frighten Olivia into leaving the state, but the message on his phone was more direct: Get the child’s hospital records and make sure she signs.

Adrian brought Olivia and Leo back to the penthouse because it was the most secure place available. Olivia agreed only after two detectives inspected every room and Adrian gave her control of the security system.

The money remained on the dining table.

Olivia looked at it with disgust. Adrian gathered the stacks, sealed them in an evidence bag, and admitted the cash had come from an account controlled by his mother. The settlement had never been his idea. He had signed nothing because Celeste told him his lawyers would handle everything.

“But you still sat there,” Olivia said. “You still let me believe you wanted us gone.”

Adrian did not defend himself. “I was angry, and believing a lie was easier than admitting I had failed you.”

Leo began to fuss. Olivia searched her bag for a bottle, but her hands shook from exhaustion. Adrian hesitated, then asked if he could hold him.

For several seconds, Olivia said nothing.

Finally, she placed Leo in his arms.

The baby stared up at Adrian, then wrapped one tiny hand around his finger. Adrian’s face changed. The polished executive disappeared, replaced by a man realizing how much of his son’s life he had already missed.

A soft knock interrupted them.

Celeste entered before anyone answered. She wore a cream coat and the composed expression that had intimidated boardrooms for thirty years. She claimed she had come to protect Adrian from manipulation.

Olivia secretly activated the recording function on her phone.

Celeste admitted arranging the false test, but insisted she had done it for the company. Richard’s trust would give Leo’s guardian temporary control of Vale Holdings if Adrian died or became incapacitated. Celeste believed Olivia would use the child to dismantle everything she had built.

“You tried to erase a baby for voting shares,” Adrian said.

“I protected your future.”

“No,” he replied. “You protected your chair.”

Celeste’s composure broke. She warned Adrian that if he recognized Leo publicly, the board would learn Richard had planned to remove her. Investors would panic. The company could collapse.

Then she revealed the final secret.

Richard’s fatal heart attack had occurred during an argument about the missing trust amendment. Celeste had delayed calling emergency services while she forced him to reveal where he had hidden the original.

She claimed he was already dying.

Adrian looked at his mother as though he had never seen her before.

Outside the penthouse, the detectives listening through Olivia’s open call moved toward the door.
