The Accident

Rebecca Carter never saw the truck until it was too late.
The impact sent her car spinning across the intersection before everything dissolved into broken glass, twisted metal, and darkness.
When she opened her eyes again, white hospital lights blurred above her. Machines beeped steadily beside the bed, and a dull ache pulsed through her head. Every attempt to move sent pain through her body.
A nurse noticed she was awake and immediately called the doctor.
"Welcome back, Rebecca," the doctor said with a reassuring smile. "You've suffered a concussion. Considering the head injury, temporary memory loss is a possibility. It's too early to know how much you'll remember."
Rebecca nodded weakly, pretending to process the information.
Within minutes, her husband, Daniel Carter, rushed into the room, followed closely by her younger sister, Olivia Hayes. Both looked relieved.
Daniel took her hand.
"Rebecca... can you hear me?"
She looked at him without speaking immediately.
Inside her mind, everything was perfectly clear.
She remembered driving home.
She remembered their house.
She remembered every birthday, every vacation, every argument.
Nothing was missing.
The doctor continued asking simple questions to evaluate her condition, and Rebecca answered carefully, never revealing more than necessary. Eventually, the medical staff stepped outside to prepare additional tests, leaving the room quiet.
Rebecca closed her eyes, pretending to rest.
A few moments later, she heard voices just beyond the partially closed hospital door.
Daniel.
And Olivia.
Their conversation was hushed, but the hallway was silent enough for every word to carry.
"Do you think she remembers?" Olivia whispered.
"I don't know," Daniel replied.
A long pause followed.
Then Rebecca heard the sentence that made her heart stop.
"If she doesn't remember anything..." Daniel said quietly, "...it might actually make things easier."
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
Rebecca lay perfectly still, every instinct telling her not to move.
Easier?
Easier for what?
For whom?
The words echoed through her mind far louder than the crash itself.
When the doctor returned, Rebecca had already made her decision.
She looked around the room with carefully measured confusion.
"I'm sorry..." she said softly.
Her voice trembled just enough to sound believable.
"I... I don't know who anyone is."
Daniel's eyes widened.
The doctor exchanged a quick glance with the nurse.
Rebecca lowered her gaze, hiding the fact that her mind was racing.
She remembered everything.
Every face.
Every relationship.
Every detail of her life.

No one would know that.
