Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Refused the Diamond|

Marcus had never been good at waiting.

In business, he preferred decisions made quickly and executed precisely.

In family matters, that habit had cost him more than he understood.

Norah was different.

She didn't rush Lily.

She didn't rush the investigation.

And she certainly didn't rush Marcus.

When he offered her the permanent position, she asked for an independent contract, a separate residence, and full access to Lily's educational and medical decisions.

He agreed.

When he offered to pay her mother's remaining hospital expenses, she accepted only after the funds were documented as a repayable loan.

He didn't argue.

He was beginning to understand that respect sometimes meant accepting a boundary without trying to negotiate it away.

Three months passed.

Lily began speaking in short sentences.

She told Norah when she wanted breakfast.

She told Marcus when she didn't want to attend an appointment.

She even began laughing occasionally.

The first time Marcus heard her laugh, he dropped his coffee.

Norah laughed at him.

Lily laughed harder.

For a few minutes, the house felt like a home.

Then Marcus made a mistake.

He invited Norah to a charity dinner without explaining that the event would be attended by several business associates who had known Evelyn.

Norah arrived wearing a simple navy dress.

Marcus approached her.

"You look beautiful."

"Thank you."

He offered his arm.

She hesitated.

"Is this a business event?"

"Partly."

"Then I should have known beforehand."

Marcus frowned.

"It's only dinner."

"For you, perhaps."

She glanced across the ballroom.

Several guests were already watching them.

"I don't want to become part of a public story I didn't agree to."

He understood immediately.

"I'm sorry."

Norah nodded.

She stayed for the event but left before the speeches.

The following morning, Marcus found her in the garden.

"I've been thinking."

"That sounds dangerous."

He smiled.

"I want to ask you something."

Norah looked at him.

He reached into his pocket.

Then stopped.

"I had a ring made."

Her expression changed.

Marcus continued.

"But I'm not going to ask you to marry me."

Norah looked confused.

"Then why do you have a ring?"

"Because I wanted to know whether I could imagine a future with you without trying to own it."

He showed her the small box.

Inside was a simple gold ring with a tiny blue stone.

"It isn't an engagement ring," he said. "It's a thank-you."

Norah stared at it.

"For what?"

"For showing Lily that love doesn't have to be demanded."

She looked away.

"Marcus, I care about Lily. I care about you too. But I'm not ready to make promises."

"I know."

"And I won't become another person who lives according to this family's expectations."

"I don't want that."

She closed the box and returned it to him.

"Then let's take our time."

He nodded.

For the first time, he didn't try to persuade her.

That evening, Lily noticed the ring box on his desk.

She picked it up and carried it to Norah.

"Pretty."

Norah smiled.

"Yes, it is."

Lily studied her.

"Marry Daddy?"

Norah laughed softly.

"That's a very big question."

Lily considered that.

Then she shook her head.

"Not yet."

Norah blinked.

"Not yet?"

Lily nodded.

"First... dinner."

And for the first time, Marcus laughed so hard that his daughter laughed with him.

But the happiness didn't last long.

The next morning, Norah received an anonymous email.

It contained a photograph of Evelyn standing outside a hospital.

May you like

The message beneath it was only one sentence.

You haven't discovered the real reason she died.
