One night, a sudden summer thunderstorm rolled over the coast. Thunder crashed loudly, shaking the glass windows. Mark immediately ran down the hallway to the children's room.
He found Lily crouching in the corner of her closet, holding Owen in her arms. She was holding a plastic toy broom like a shield, her body shaking violently.
"Don't take him!" she screamed as Mark opened the door, her eyes wide with terror. "I'll clean the whole house! I'll sweep the yard! Just don't put Owen in the dark!"

Mark’s heart shattered. He dropped to his knees, throwing his arms around both of them, taking the blow if she swung the toy.
"It's Daddy, Lily! Look at me! It's Daddy!" he cried out. "No one is locking anyone up! Look at the door—it's open! It will always be open!"
