Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING|

Rachel refused to explain the second recording until Holly arranged legal protection for her.

I understood why.

Grant had money, influence, and access to people who had spent years making his problems disappear.

But Rachel was not innocent simply because she had finally become frightened.

She had accepted the money. She had accepted the attention. She had watched him neglect his wife and son while treating her daughter like royalty.

I wasn't going to rescue her from the consequences.

Holly arranged a meeting with the district attorney's office.

Rachel arrived with a lawyer.

She looked exhausted.

“The second recording was made during a meeting at Grant's house,” she said. “It was about the emergency reserve company.”

Holly leaned forward.

“Who was present?”

“Grant, his chief financial officer, and a man named Victor Hale.”

I recognized the name.

Victor had been Grant's financial adviser since the early days of Breakwater.

“What did they discuss?”

Rachel looked at me.

“Your ownership.”

Holly pressed the recorder.

Grant's voice emerged.

“The original agreement is a problem. Mara still has controlling rights over the reserve subsidiary.”

Victor answered, “Then amend it.”

“I tried. The trustee rejected the change.”

“Can she be bought out?”

“She won't sign.”

A pause followed.

Then Grant said, “She will if she believes she's protecting Eli.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

Victor asked, “What are you proposing?”

“Something that gives her a reason to leave the company without asking questions.”

Rachel's voice appeared in the recording.

“Grant, don't do this.”

He answered sharply.

“You're not part of this conversation.”

Then Victor said, “What about the child?”

Grant replied:

“Eli doesn't need to know anything about the company.”

Holly stopped the recording.

“That is not enough by itself to prove fraud, but it establishes intent to pressure you into surrendering your ownership.”

I stared at the screen.

Grant had planned to use our son as leverage.

He had intended to make me believe that signing away my rights was the only way to protect Eli.

I thought about the separation agreement he had brought to the hospital.

The clauses.

The restrictions.

The demand that I surrender my ownership.

It had never been about ending our marriage peacefully.

It had been about getting my signature.

Holly turned to Rachel.

“Why did you record this?”

Rachel's eyes lowered.

“Because Grant told me he would marry me after the company restructuring. I wanted proof that he meant it.”

I almost laughed.

“You wanted proof he would leave his wife?”

Rachel flinched.

“Yes.”

“And now you want protection because he might leave you holding the blame.”

“Yes.”

At least she was honest.

Holly closed her folder.

“The recording will be submitted to investigators. You will need to provide a full statement.”

Rachel nodded.

Before she left, she turned toward me.

“I know you hate me.”

“I don't have time to hate you.”

She looked surprised.

“I have a child to raise. I have a company to protect. And I have a husband who nearly got our son killed.”

Rachel lowered her head.

“I am sorry.”

I didn't answer.

After she left, Holly received a call from Daniel.

He had reviewed the original trust and found something important.

“The emergency clause is only the beginning,” he said.

“What else?”

“Your ownership wasn't just protected. The trust gives you the right to remove the chief executive if an independent investigation confirms intentional misuse of emergency medical resources.”

I sat back.

“Can we do that?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“As soon as the board receives the evidence.”

I looked at Holly.

“Then let's give them everything.”
