Chapter 14 - THE DOG BOWLS DISAPPEARED—THEN CAME BACKI threw out the old bowls the day after the incident.

Later, I regretted that.
Not morally.
Just practically.
Our actual dog, Benny, still needed to eat.
We bought new bowls.
For weeks, Noah avoided them.
Then one morning, he poured kibble into Benny’s bowl himself.
I froze.
Noah looked up.
“Dog food is for Benny.”
“Yes.”
“People food for Noah.”
“Yes.”
Then he poured too much.
Kibble scattered across the floor.
I tensed automatically.
He looked at me.
“Mess.”
“Yes.”
“Am I bad?”
My heart cracked.
“No.”
“What am I?”
I crouched.
“A kid who spilled dog food.”
He thought.
Then smiled.
“Big mess kid.”
I laughed.
“Very big.”
We cleaned it together.
No punishment.
No symbolic lesson.
May you like
Just kibble.
The bowl became a bowl again.
