Chapter 17 - THE EMAIL THAT ENDED THE LIE|

The email was dated six months after the fire.

Preston had written it to Martin Kessler.

Vivian is asking questions again. She remembers the argument but not the details. I have told her the doctors believe the smoke affected her memory.

Martin replied:

You need to stop letting her near the company.

Preston's response was chilling.

She has no authority. I control the accounts, the house, and the insurance settlement. If she becomes difficult, I'll make sure everyone knows how unstable she is.

There was another message.

The scars are useful. She already avoids public events. People see what happened to her and assume she's fragile. Let her believe she needs me.

I read it twice.

For five years, Preston had used my injuries as a way to control me.

He had turned my survival into a weapon against me.

I had spent so much time trying to make him comfortable with my body that I had failed to recognize how deliberately he was making me uncomfortable with my own life.

Rebecca saved the email and added it to the evidence file.

Cassidy had provided enough information to connect Preston to the fraudulent transfer, but she was not innocent. Her messages showed that she had helped design the gala's dress code and had deliberately used it to humiliate me.

Rebecca made that clear.

"If you cooperate, we will document your role accurately. You don't get immunity simply because you decided to tell the truth now."

Cassidy nodded.

"I understand."

Gideon began an internal investigation into Richard Cole.

The evidence showed that Richard had approved the payment to retrieve my phone, helped move funds through a dormant Ashford subsidiary, and communicated with Martin before and after the fire.

But Richard had one advantage: he had access to company records and knew how to make missing documents look like routine administrative errors.

Gideon called an emergency board meeting.

Before it began, he asked me to attend as a witness.

"I don't want you dragged into another room full of powerful men," he said.

"I've been in enough rooms where powerful men decided what I was allowed to know."

He nodded.

"Then we'll do it differently."

The board meeting began at nine.

Richard arrived with two attorneys and a thick binder.

He accused Gideon of using confidential company information to attack a competitor. He claimed the recording was incomplete and that the documents had been obtained unlawfully.

Gideon listened.

Then Rebecca presented the forensic report, the original consent form, the payment records, and Cassidy's emails.

Richard's attorneys requested a recess.

The board refused.

Richard looked toward Gideon.

"Your father made a deal with Kessler. You know that. If this becomes public, Ashford Capital will be exposed."

Gideon's face was cold.

"My father is dead. I am not responsible for hiding what he did."

Richard turned toward me.

"Mrs. Hale, you should be careful. You don't know what these people are asking you to destroy."

I met his eyes.

"I know what you tried to destroy."

The board voted to suspend Richard pending an independent investigation.

He stood abruptly.

"You'll regret this."

Then he looked at Gideon.

"Your father promised me this company would never investigate the old acquisition."

Gideon answered, "My father made a mistake. I won't repeat it."

Richard left with his attorneys.

But as the meeting ended, Rebecca received a call from the district attorney's office.

They had obtained a warrant to search Martin Kessler's property.

And they had found something that changed the case completely.

A locked cabinet containing the original Hale Meridian ledger.
