Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT EVA LOST CONTROL|

Eva arrived at the estate on a rainy Thursday evening.
She had not been invited.
Margaret later told me that Eva had insisted the meeting was urgent and that Hugh would want to see her once he understood the circumstances.
Hugh agreed to receive her in the library, with Miriam present.
Marcus was summoned from the city.
I was already at the estate reviewing documents with the foundation's trustees when I heard Eva's voice rising in the adjoining room.
“You cannot seriously believe I would risk everything for a few consulting fees.”
Hugh answered calmly.
“This is not about what I believe. It is about what the records show.”
“The records can be interpreted in many ways.”
“Then you should have no objection to an independent investigation.”
Eva gave a short, bitter laugh.
“You're letting Laura manipulate you.”
I stepped into the doorway.
“No one needs to manipulate Hugh. He reads the documents himself.”
Eva turned toward me.
For the first time, her polished composure looked fragile.
“You have been waiting for this, haven't you? Waiting for Marcus to make a mistake so you could crawl back into the family.”
I felt no need to defend myself.
“I left the marriage because Marcus was unfaithful. I stayed involved with the foundation because I was a trustee. Those are two separate things.”
“You think that makes you morally superior?”
“No. It makes me honest about what happened.”
Marcus entered the room behind her.
“Eva, stop.”
She turned on him.
“You promised me you would handle this.”
“I promised to review a business proposal. I never promised to lie for you.”
Her eyes widened.
“You signed the authorization.”
“For the preliminary assessment. Not the transfers that followed.”
“You don't understand how these deals work.”
“Then explain them to the auditors.”
Eva stared at him.
For a moment, I thought she might cry. Instead, she straightened her shoulders and looked toward Hugh.
“You cannot let one woman destroy the future of this company because she is upset about a marriage.”
Hugh stood.
“No one is asking me to choose between women. The question is whether the people responsible for this organization can be trusted with it.”
He gestured toward the documents.
“You may provide your response through counsel. Until then, you are not authorized to represent the Whitmore companies or contact foundation staff about these transactions.”
Eva's face went white.
“You can't do this.”
“The trustees have already taken the necessary steps.”
She turned to Marcus, searching his face for the man who had once defended her without hesitation.
He did not move toward her.
That was the moment she understood that the power she had exercised over him was gone.
She collected her bag.
At the door, she stopped beside me.
“You think you've won.”
I met her eyes.
“I never wanted to compete with you.”
“That's what people say when they've won.”
She walked out into the rain.
Nobody followed her.
Marcus stood in the center of the library, staring at the closed door.
Hugh looked at him.
“Do you understand what happened here?”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I stopped making excuses for her.”
May you like
“No,” Hugh said. “You stopped making excuses for yourself.”
And for once, my husband did not argue.
