Chapter 9 - Sophia's Real Name|

Vincent did not speak.

He simply stared at Evelyn's phone while the name settled between us.

Reynolds.

Sophia Reynolds had been part of his life since childhood. He knew her parents, her favorite restaurants, the names of her childhood friends, and the stories she told about her first car. He had never questioned the details she offered about her family.

Now Evelyn was telling us that Sophia had been connected to the disappearance of his first wife.

“That doesn't prove anything,” Vincent said at last.

“No,” Evelyn agreed. “It establishes a connection worth investigating.”

Daniel arrived with additional records from Vincent's office. Among them was a list of payments to a private investigator who had supposedly been hired to search for Elena after she disappeared.

The investigator had received money for nearly two years.

But there were no reports.

No receipts for travel.

No documented interviews.

Only invoices.

The company receiving the payments had been registered to an address that now belonged to a vacant storefront.

Vincent stared at the papers.

“My father paid this investigator.”

“According to the records,” Daniel said.

“And Marcus approved the more recent payments.”

“Yes.”

Vincent looked at me.

“I thought Elena had abandoned me. I believed my family had done everything possible to find her.”

I wanted to comfort him. The old instinct rose automatically, but I forced myself to remain still.

“Then you need to find out whether she was actually searched for.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

Evelyn insisted that all documents be handed over to investigators. She also advised me to remain in the hospital until my medical team approved my discharge and to keep Grace's information restricted to authorized visitors.

I signed the necessary paperwork.

Vincent asked whether he could visit Grace again.

I agreed to a supervised visit, but only after Evelyn confirmed the arrangements with the neonatal team.

When Vincent entered the unit, he stood beside the incubator without speaking for nearly a minute.

“She's beautiful,” he whispered.

“She is,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Thank you for giving her a chance to live.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“I didn't do it for you.”

“I know.”

He reached toward the incubator but stopped before touching it.

The nurse helped him place one finger near Grace's hand. She curled her tiny fingers around it.

Vincent's face crumpled.

“I missed everything,” he whispered.

“You missed the moment when I needed you most.”

He bowed his head.

“I will regret that for the rest of my life.”

I believed him.

But regret could not give me back the hours I had spent terrified, nor could it erase the years I had spent feeling alone beside my own husband.

As Vincent left the unit, Sophia appeared at the far end of the corridor.

She wore a cream coat and carried a designer handbag. Her eyes were fixed on the incubator.

“What are you doing here?” Vincent demanded.

“I came to see the baby.”

“You're not authorized to visit.”

Her gaze shifted to me.

“Claire, surely you're not going to let a personal disagreement keep me from meeting her.”

I stared at her.

“This isn't a disagreement.”

Sophia's smile faltered.

Then she stepped closer to Vincent and lowered her voice.

“You need to stop asking about Elena.”

Vincent froze.

Sophia realized her mistake a second too late.

He caught her gaze.

“How do you know we've been asking about Elena?”

May you like

For the first time in all the years I had known her, Sophia looked genuinely frightened.

Then she whispered, “Because she isn't dead.”
