Chapter 11 - The Enemy at His Own Table|

Daniel opened the door.

The corridor was empty.

A nurse passing with a cart said she had seen a man in a gray suit walking toward the elevators, but she did not know who he was.

Vincent immediately called his security team. Evelyn reminded him not to turn the hospital into a private investigation headquarters, so he moved the discussion to a nearby conference room.

Daniel remained beside him.

“Boss, the man may have been a visitor. We don't have enough to identify him.”

“Then find out who was on the visitor list.”

“Already requested.”

Vincent looked exhausted.

For years, he had built his reputation on knowing what happened inside his organization. His men brought him reports, his accountants brought him numbers, and his advisers told him what they believed he wanted to hear.

Now he was discovering that the information had been filtered.

Someone had used his authority to move money, forge documents, and possibly conceal a woman's disappearance.

And Vincent had made it easy.

He had trusted people because they were familiar, not because they were honest.

Evelyn returned from a call with the investigator.

“Elena has agreed to a recorded interview tomorrow. She wants to speak with you, Vincent, but she has conditions.”

“Name them.”

“She will not meet at your house. She will not meet alone. And she wants a written assurance that nobody connected to your family will attempt to pressure her.”

Vincent swallowed.

“Agreed.”

“She also wants Claire's attorney present.”

He glanced at me.

“Of course.”

I was surprised he did not argue.

Evelyn turned to me.

“You don't need to participate if you're not ready.”

“I want to know the truth,” I said. “But I don't want to be involved in his family affairs beyond what affects me and Grace.”

“That is entirely reasonable.”

Vincent lowered his eyes.

The next morning, a detective named Rachel Hayes met with us in a private interview room. She explained that she was examining the forged authorization and the financial transfers, while another investigator was reviewing the historical case involving Elena.

She made it clear that no conclusions had been reached.

Elena arrived shortly afterward.

She was in her early thirties, with dark hair cut to her shoulders and a small scar near her left temple. She wore a plain navy sweater and held a leather folder against her chest.

Vincent stood when he saw her.

“Elena.”

She did not move toward him.

“You look older.”

“So do you.”

A sad smile crossed her face.

Then it vanished.

“I didn't come back to make peace with you. I came because I heard someone was using the same methods my father-in-law used to control people.”

Vincent sat down slowly.

“What did my father do?”

Elena opened the folder.

She produced copies of financial records, correspondence, and a statement she had written years earlier. According to her account, Vincent's father had tried to force her to sign over assets she had inherited. When she refused, he threatened to expose private information about her family and use the Moretti network to make her life unbearable.

She had left because she feared that remaining would destroy her freedom.

“I thought you would protect me,” she told Vincent. “But every time I asked you to stand up to your father, you told me to be patient.”

Vincent's face tightened.

“I was young.”

“So was I.”

He had no answer.

Elena slid a final document across the table.

“Your father kept copies of everything. He had a private ledger of payments and names. I believe Marcus Vale found it after your father's death.”

Detective Hayes leaned forward.

“Do you know where that ledger is now?”

Elena looked at Vincent.

“Your grandfather has it.”

Vincent's expression changed.

“My grandfather?”

Elena nodded.

“He's celebrating his birthday this week, isn't he? Then you should ask him what he intends to do with the ledger.”

Vincent stared at her.

May you like

His grandfather's birthday celebration had been the very event he had chosen over my delivery.

And now Elena was telling him that the truth might be sitting inside the family home, waiting for him to return.
