Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Driveway

"They were restless, Daniel," I said, my voice remarkably steady, though my hands were gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles were white. "They wanted to wait for you out here. We thought it would be a nice surprise."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed slightly behind his glasses. He looked past me, his gaze scanning the front facade of the house, checking the windows, the front door. He was a meticulous man, a man who built his entire life on controlling variables. My sudden shift in behavior was a variable he hadn't planned for.
"Right," he said slowly, his smile not reaching his eyes. "Well, let's all go inside. It's freezing out here, and I need to check on the... household files."
He reached into his pocket, his fingers wrapping around the heavy brass ring that held the basement keys. The metallic clink of the keys was the terrifying sound of reality breaking through.
"You go ahead, Daniel," I said, offering a tight smile. "I left my purse in the trunk. I’ll bring the girls in right behind you."
Daniel hesitated for a fraction of a second, his focus locked onto mine. He was trying to read me, trying to see if the reality he had edited for the last year was still intact. Finally, he nodded, turning on his heel and walking up the stone steps to the front door. He inserted his key, turned the lock, and stepped inside the grand colonial hallway.
The heavy front door clicked shut behind him.
The second the door closed, I slammed my hand onto the car’s central locking button, the loud thunk of the sedan's doors sealing us inside. I turned the ignition key, the engine roaring to life with a loud, mechanical rumble.
"Sarah?" Grace asked from the backseat, her voice nervous. "Are we not going inside?"
"No, sweetie," I said, shifting the car into reverse and slamming my foot onto the gas pedal. The tires spun on the loose gravel, kicking up dust as the car shot backward down the long, winding driveway toward the main road. "We’re going to go see some friends."
Through the rearview mirror, I saw the front door of the colonial estate fly open.
Daniel stood on the porch, his corporate blazer open, his face completely contorted in a wild, furious rage. He wasn't the charming, loving husband anymore. He looked like a monster discovered in the light. He ran down the stone steps, sprinting toward his SUV, realizing in a single flash that his secret had been completely blown.
I didn't look back again. I accelerated down the forest road, my phone already in my hand, dialing the one number that could save us.

"911, what is your emergency?"
"My name is Sarah Vance," I gasped, my voice finally breaking into tears as the forest flew past the windows. "My husband... my husband has been holding his first wife hostage in our basement for three years. He’s chasing me right now. Please... you have to send everyone."
