Chapter 1 - The Lakeview Promise

The morning sun caught the gentle ripples of the lake, turning the water into a sheet of liquid diamonds. It was a beautiful day for a wedding, small and intimate, surrounded only by the rustling trees and our closest family. I stood under the floral arch, adjusting my lace gown, looking at the man who had completely changed my life over the past year.
Daniel looked incredibly handsome in his sharp white suit, his glasses catching the light as he smiled warmly at me. But as much as I loved Daniel, it was the two little girls standing beside him that had truly captured my heart. Six-year-old Grace and four-year-old Emily were absolute angels, wearing delicate white dresses that matched mine, looking up at us with wide, innocent eyes.
When I first started dating Daniel, he was completely upfront with me. He was a widower, fiercely protective of his daughters, raising them entirely on his own after his first wife had tragically passed away in a car accident three years earlier. Over the past twelve months, I hadn't just fallen in love with a man; I had fallen in love with a ready-made family. I came to love Emily and Grace as if they were my very own flesh and blood.
After we exchanged our vows and the lakeside ceremony drew to a close, we took our first official family portrait. Standing beneath the canopy of white roses, Daniel held Grace securely in his arms, while I lifted little Emily, her small hand resting trustingly on my shoulder. We looked like the picture-perfect definition of a fresh start. A new beginning built on the ashes of an old tragedy.
Later that afternoon, the reality of my new life truly set in as Daniel drove us to his home—a grand, beautiful colonial estate nestled on a secluded, heavily wooded plot outside the city. The house was magnificent, featuring high ceilings, large windows
that let in the shifting forest light, and a massive kitchen that promised years of family dinners.
But as I carried my final suitcase into the central hallway, my eyes immediately traveled down the corridor to a heavy, dark oak door tucked beneath the main staircase. It stood out from the rest of the house's bright, airy aesthetic. In the middle of the dark wood was a heavy, industrial-grade deadbolt lock.
"What's behind that door?" I asked casually, setting my bag down.
Daniel, who was hanging up his wedding jacket, stiffened for a fraction of a second. The warmth in his eyes seemed to cool instantly, replaced by a
strange, sudden tension. He cleared his throat quickly, offering a tight smile.
"Oh, that's just the basement door, Sarah," he said, his voice smooth but slightly too fast. "It's completely full of old, broken junk from the previous owner, along with some heavy tools. It’s incredibly unsafe down there. To make absolutely sure the girls don't accidentally wander in, explore, and get themselves seriously hurt, I keep it permanently deadbolted."

It sounded entirely reasonable. A protective father looking out for his restless daughters. I nodded, accepting the answer without another thought. But as Daniel walked away to help the girls into their room, I noticed Grace and Emily standing at the top of the stairs. They weren't looking at their father. They were staring down at that locked dark oak door with an expression that didn't look like curiosity at all.
It looked like fear.
