Chapter 18 - THE HOUSEKEEPER'S SECRET|

Elena asked the investigator to repeat the name.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

The housekeeper had worked for the Moretti family for nearly twenty years. She had helped Elena settle into the mansion, brought her tea when she worked late, and comforted her when Ryan's threats became unbearable.

Elena struggled to understand how the same woman could be connected to the surveillance operation.

The investigator explained that the signature appeared on a document authorizing access to an old staff directory. It did not establish that Mrs. Bennett had ordered anyone to harm Elena's mother, but it suggested that she had known more than she admitted.

Elena agreed to meet her with the investigator present.

Mrs. Bennett arrived looking exhausted. She did not deny signing the document.

“Thomas told me he needed to locate your mother because she had taken confidential company papers,” she explained. “He said he wanted to recover them before the family was destroyed.”

“And you believed him?”

“I was frightened. He threatened to expose a mistake I had made years earlier. I thought I could help him find the papers without anyone being hurt.”

Elena stared at her.

“You gave him my mother's information.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know she was in danger?”

Mrs. Bennett began to cry.

“I knew she was frightened. I didn't know what he intended to do.”

The explanation did not erase the betrayal.

“You watched me come to this house every day,” Elena said. “You saw the bruises. You knew what Ryan was doing. And you still kept the truth from me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“So was I. I was ashamed of being afraid. I was ashamed that I couldn't make him stop. But I didn't use my shame to hide what happened to someone else.”

Mrs. Bennett lowered her head.

She admitted that she had kept the brass key because Elena's mother had asked her to protect the records. She had not known that the key would lead to the black book, but she suspected it contained evidence that could destroy Thomas Vale's operation.

When Thomas disappeared, she told herself the danger had passed.

Then Ryan arrived at the mansion.

She had recognized him from an old photograph in Thomas's files and realized that the past had returned. Her fear made her hesitate again, until she finally left the warning note beneath Elena's door.

The investigator documented her statement and explained that the authorities would determine whether her actions constituted an offense. Mrs. Bennett agreed to provide all remaining correspondence.

Elena left the meeting feeling both furious and exhausted.

Alessandro waited outside.

“You don't have to forgive her,” he said.

“I know.”

“You also don't have to decide today what you feel.”

Elena nodded.

“I keep thinking that if people had simply told the truth, my mother might still be alive.”

“Maybe,” he said softly. “But you can't carry every choice they made as if it were yours.”

She leaned against him.

Over the next several weeks, the investigation advanced. Richard's records corroborated several witness statements. Thomas Vale's old business associates were identified, and authorities began examining the circumstances of the accident that killed Elena's mother.

The evidence suggested a conspiracy, but it did not yet establish who had physically caused the crash.

Alessandro also made a major decision about his own future. He stepped away from the family's private security operations and transferred control of legitimate businesses to an independent board. He agreed to cooperate with a comprehensive review of the old accounts, even though the findings could damage his reputation.

His advisers called it surrender.

He called it accountability.

Elena began her training at the rehabilitation center and discovered that helping other women name their experiences was harder—and more rewarding—than she had expected.

One afternoon, a woman arrived wearing sunglasses indoors. She claimed she had fallen down the stairs.

Elena recognized the fear in her voice.

She sat beside her and said, “You don't have to tell me everything today. But you don't have to pretend you're fine, either.”

The woman began to cry.

Elena thought of the dining room, the chandelier, and Alessandro's quiet question.

For the first time, she understood how much that small moment had changed her life.

Then the investigator called again.

They had found Maria Santos.

May you like

She was alive.

And she wanted to speak to Elena in person.
