Chapter 1 - THE BRUISE HE COULDN’T IGNORE|

The bruise had looked smaller in the bathroom mirror.
Under the dining room chandelier, there was nowhere to hide it. Warm light settled over Elena Carter’s cheek, revealing the discoloration beneath the makeup she had applied before dawn.
Twelve men sat around the mahogany table.
None reached for his coffee.
Alessandro Moretti stood beside his chair, watching the pot tremble between her hands.
“Set it down.”
Elena obeyed too quickly. The silver base struck its tray with a small, humiliating sound.
“I walked into a cabinet, sir.”
He did not look toward the other men. He did not smile at the explanation or demand she improve it.
Instead, he took one step closer.
Elena stepped back.
He stopped immediately.
That startled her more than his question.
In eleven months working at the mansion outside Chicago, she had watched men twice her age fall silent when Alessandro entered a room. At thirty-six, he possessed the kind of wealth that opened doors and a reputation that made people cautious about what might wait behind them.
Nobody interrupted him.
Nobody told him no.
Now he stood still because she had moved away.
“Meeting’s over,” he said.
A man near the windows cleared his throat.
“We haven’t discussed the revised—”
“Tomorrow.”
Chairs moved across the floor. Papers disappeared into leather cases. The room emptied with an efficiency Elena usually admired and now found terrifying.
She had disrupted something important.
Important things belonged to people who could afford mistakes.
She could not.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “Please don’t fire me.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“Why would I fire you?”
She glanced at the abandoned table.
He followed her gaze, then pulled out a chair.
“Sit if you’d like.”
If you’d like.
The words left a small space she did not know how to occupy.
Elena sat.
Her cheek throbbed. Her wrist ached beneath her sleeve. She wanted to get through her shift, collect her pay on Friday, and go home to the apartment she shared with her nineteen-year-old sister.
Sophie had an examination that afternoon.
She needed twenty-eight dollars for a nursing laboratory fee.
Elena had counted the money twice before leaving home.
“Does your eye hurt?” Alessandro asked.
“A little.”
“Can you see clearly?”
“Yes.”
He turned toward the doorway.
“Mrs. Bennett, is Dr. Reeves still in the guest wing?”
The housekeeper appeared almost immediately.
“Yes.”
“Please ask whether he can speak with Elena.”
“No.”
The word escaped before Elena could stop it.
Alessandro turned back.
“I can’t pay for that.”
His expression changed, but his voice remained quiet.
“We can arrange the cost. You decide whether you want to be examined.”
She studied him.
Kindness had once been the beginning of everything she regretted.
Ryan had paid a bill. Fixed her car. Offered to help when her mother became ill.
Later, every favor acquired a price.
She looked down.
Alessandro’s phone vibrated.
He read the screen.
For the first time, the stillness in his face became something else.
Elena saw the photograph before he turned it away.
The iron gates.
A dark SUV.
Ryan Mercer standing beside the intercom.
Her breath stopped.
“No,” she whispered.
Alessandro looked at her.
“You know him.”
She nodded.
Another message appeared beneath the photograph.
He says Elena belongs to him. He wants her sent outside.
Elena gripped the arms of the chair.
Last night, Ryan had stood outside her apartment demanding money. When she refused to let him enter, he grabbed her wrist. She pulled away and struck the doorframe.
He had watched her fall without helping.
Now he had found her here.
“Please,” she said. “Whatever he tells you, don’t open that gate.”
Alessandro reached for his phone.
May you like
His voice was almost gentle.
“Marco. Keep it locked.”
