Chapter 8 - The Father's Voice

|

"That is a remarkably disrespectful tone to take with your father, Mauricio," Arthur’s voice crackled through the phone. It was the smooth, polished baritone of a man entirely used to absolute obedience.

Mauricio gripped the edge of the kitchen counter. "Respect is earned, Arthur. Not demanded by a man who forces a six-year-old to scrub pots in scalding water."

A sharp, irritated sigh echoed down the line. "Are we still throwing a tantrum over that? Your mother was simply trying to instill some discipline. The girl is far too soft. You are raising her to be weak."

"I am raising her to be loved," Mauricio shot back, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper so Renata wouldn't hear him from the other side of the kitchen. "Something you clearly know absolutely nothing about."

"Watch your mouth," Arthur warned, the polite veneer cracking to reveal the ruthless corporate titan beneath. "You left your sister's dinner without saying a word. Paola was in tears. You humiliated this family in front of our guests."

"Paola will survive," Mauricio said coldly. "We won't be attending any more family dinners. We are done."

The silence on the other end of the phone was heavy, stretching for several agonizing seconds. When Arthur finally spoke, the anger was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating amusement that made Mauricio's blood run cold.

"You think you can just walk away from us, Mauricio?" Arthur chuckled darkly. "You think you can just take that child and shut the door on your own blood?"

"I already have," Mauricio stated firmly.

"You are incredibly naive," Arthur murmured softly. "You have absolutely no idea who that child really is, do you?"

Mauricio’s breath hitched in his throat. His father was testing him. Fishing to see if Mauricio had finally stumbled onto the truth.

Mauricio forced his voice to remain perfectly, completely deadpan. "She is my daughter. That is all I need to know."

"She is a legal liability," Arthur corrected sharply. "And she belongs under the jurisdiction of the Jacobs family trust. I suggest you pack her things and bring her to my office by noon today. We need to discuss the restructuring of her guardianship."

"I am her legal father," Mauricio growled, the sheer audacity of the demand infuriating him. "You have no legal right to her."

"I have judges in my pocket who will revoke your adoption papers before you finish your morning coffee," Arthur threatened, entirely dropping the mask. "I can have you declared unfit. I can have you buried in child services investigations. Bring her to my office, Mauricio. Do not make me destroy you."

"If you come anywhere near my daughter," Mauricio promised, his eyes burning with a sudden, violent rage, "I will tear your life apart."

He hung up the phone, ending the call before his father could say another word. The war had officially begun.
