Chapter 14 - The Fall of the Empire

|

"Arthur Jacobs," the lead federal agent announced, stepping into the massive office and holding up a gleaming silver badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, federal wire fraud, and extortion."

Arthur dropped the phone receiver. It dangled off the edge of the desk, a high-pitched dial tone echoing uselessly in the quiet room.

The arrogant billionaire didn't fight. He didn't scream for his lawyers. He simply stared blankly at the federal agents as they marched around the desk, pulled his hands roughly behind his back, and secured a pair of cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Mauricio," Arthur rasped, his voice sounding small and weak for the first time in his life. He looked at his son with desperate, pleading eyes as the agents dragged him toward the door. "Mauricio, please. I'm your father. Don't let them do this."

Mauricio stood with his hands in his pockets, watching the man who had tormented his daughter finally meet his ruin.

"You stopped being my father the moment you looked at my daughter and saw nothing but a bank account," Mauricio replied, his voice entirely devoid of mercy.

As the agents led Arthur out of the office, the entire floor of the corporate tower descended into absolute chaos. Executives panicked, shredding documents and screaming into phones. The invincible empire of Jacobs Enterprises was crumbling to dust in real time.

Mauricio didn't stay to watch the collapse. He turned his back on the ruined office, walked to the private elevator, and headed back up to his secure suite.

When he opened the door, Renata was sitting cross-legged on the plush carpet, happily eating a massive bowl of strawberry ice cream. She looked up, her face covered in pink smudges, and beamed at him.

"Daddy! The lady brought me sprinkles!" Renata cheered, holding up her spoon.

Mauricio felt a massive, suffocating weight completely lift off his chest. The war was over. The monsters were locked away. His daughter was safe.

He walked over and sat on the floor next to her, completely ignoring his expensive suit. He grabbed a spoon and dug into the ice cream with her, laughing as she recounted a story about a cartoon she was watching.

They stayed in the secure suite until evening, letting the news of Arthur's arrest dominate the city's headlines. When the media frenzy finally settled around the corporate building, Mauricio carried a sleepy Renata down to the underground garage and drove them safely back to their quiet townhouse.

He tucked her into bed, kissed her forehead, and pulled the heavy blankets up to her chin.

"I love you, Renata," Mauricio whispered into the quiet room.

"I love you too, Daddy," she mumbled, already half asleep.

Mauricio turned off the lamp and walked downstairs to his study, intending to finally pour himself a much-needed glass of bourbon.

But as he walked into the dimly lit room, his heart stopped dead in his chest.

There was a new drawing resting in the center of his mahogany desk.
