Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

The morning of the big weekend arrived with radiant sunshine and cloudless blue skies over northern California.
At the Napa resort, Emily stood in the bridal suite, fuming in her silk robe as she looked over the depleted guest roster. The venue was half-empty, the front family pews practically deserted. The grand Italianate villa rose majestically against the hills, surrounded by manicured rose gardens, cascading water fountains, and a stone terrace where thirty family members sat laughing over artisanal platters and private-reserve wine.
I was standing near the grand floral arch on the terrace, wearing a classic, floor-length off-the-shoulder crimson red silk gown with a high slit, holding a champagne flute and chatting with Grandma Eleanor.
