Chapter 2 - The Ghost at the Vineyard

By the time I reached the highway heading north toward Sonoma County, my phone was buzzing incessantly on the passenger seat.

Mom: "Claire, you need to understand that Emily is under immense stress. Be the bigger person." Ashley: "So sorry you couldn't stay! Love you though ❤️" Aunt Clara: "Family means swallowing your pride sometimes, dear."

I placed the phone face down and didn't answer a single notification.

The family had spent the last eight years treating my life in Sonoma as a quaint, insignificant hobby. Whenever holidays came around, Uncle Robert would ask if I was "still playing around with those grapevines," while Mom would boast about Emily’s fiancé, a junior partner at a mid-tier commercial real estate firm.

They had never bothered to visit. They had never cared to look beyond the surface.

If they had, they would have discovered that Alder Creek Vineyard was no amateur farm. Spanning forty pristine acres in the heart of Sonoma Valley, it was an award-winning boutique estate valued at over $4.2 million. Over a decade of relentless, seventy-hour workweeks, I had transformed historic stone barns into world-class tasting rooms, restored sunlit guest villas, and established an internationally acclaimed private reserve that was booked six months in advance by elite patrons.

As my SUV crossed the iron gates of Alder Creek, illuminated by soft amber landscape lighting, the beauty of the rolling vineyards and the Italianate stone villa grounded me.

My estate manager, David, walked out from the tasting room with a clipboard, offering a warm smile. "Claire, the harvest festival bookings for next month just sold out in under ten minutes. How did the San Francisco trip go?"

I stepped out of the car, breathing in the crisp night air scented with ripening grapes and damp cedar.

"It made things very clear, David," I said quietly. "Cancel our planned weekend closure next month. We're hosting a private family reunion instead."
