Chapter 18 - THE BRIDE WHO WAS NEVER AN HEIRESS|

Isabella Moretti was preparing for a charity luncheon when Catherine arrived at her home.

Nicholas answered the door, looking confused by the unexpected visit.

“Catherine? Is Gabriel with you?”

“No. I need to speak with Isabella alone.”

Nicholas glanced at her bandaged hand, now almost healed.

“Is something wrong?”

“Yes,” Catherine replied. “But it isn’t your fault.”

Isabella appeared at the top of the staircase wearing a pale blue dress. She smiled politely until she noticed the photograph Catherine carried.

Then her face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

Catherine held up the photograph of Elena at the clinic.

“Do you recognize her?”

Isabella came down the stairs slowly.

“I’ve seen that woman before.”

“Where?”

“In a photograph my adoptive mother kept. She said the woman was a nurse who helped with my birth.”

Catherine felt her pulse quicken.

“Do you know your biological parents?”

Isabella’s expression became guarded.

“My parents adopted me. They never hid that.”

“Did they tell you why?”

“They said my biological mother had been unable to care for me.”

Catherine placed the hospital record on the table.

“This document says two girls were born at the same clinic on the same night. One was recorded as Catherine Elena Bell. The other was registered under a temporary name before being transferred to the Moretti family.”

Isabella stared at the paper.

“No.”

“I’m not asking you to believe me without proof. I’m asking you to look at the evidence.”

Nicholas stepped closer.

“Isabella, what is she talking about?”

Isabella’s hands began to tremble.

“My mother told me I was adopted. She said there were no records because the clinic had closed.”

Catherine showed her the photograph of Elena.

The resemblance was unmistakable now that they stood side by side. They shared the same dark eyes, the same narrow chin, and the same small crease between their brows.

Isabella sat down.

“Why would someone hide this?”

“Because the Romano family was trying to protect its inheritance,” Catherine said. “Someone believed two daughters could be used to control two branches of the family.”

Nicholas looked horrified.

“You’re saying Isabella was part of a scheme?”

“I’m saying she was a child. Whatever the adults did, she had no choice.”

Isabella looked up.

“Are you saying we’re sisters?”

“I believe we might be.”

For a long moment, neither woman moved.

Then Isabella began to cry.

“I spent my whole life wondering why my adoptive mother never let me see my birth records. She said the past would only hurt me.”

Catherine sat beside her.

“My mother told me almost the same thing.”

Isabella took her hand.

“Does Elena know?”

“Yes.”

“Will she want to meet me?”

Catherine’s eyes filled.

“She has been searching for answers for years. I think she would like to meet you.”

Nicholas stepped away, giving them privacy.

Outside, the city continued moving as if nothing had changed.

But inside the quiet living room, two women who had been separated before they could speak were discovering that their lives had been shaped by the same secret.

Before Catherine left, Isabella gave her a small envelope.

“My adoptive father kept this in his safe. He said it belonged to the family who gave me up.”

Inside was a photograph of Vittorio standing beside Dr. Samuel Price.

On the back, someone had written:

The second child is not the only secret.

Catherine looked at Isabella.

“What does that mean?”

Isabella shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Then her phone rang.
