Chapter 16 - THE CHAPEL BENEATH THE ESTATE|

The old Romano chapel stood behind the main estate, hidden among oak trees and overgrown hedges. It had not been used for family ceremonies since Lorenzo’s death.

Gabriel arrived with Catherine, Elena, and a small team he trusted personally. He had dismissed every employee connected to his uncle’s office and arranged for an independent attorney to preserve copies of the evidence.

No one was to enter the chapel without his permission.

Catherine carried the keys.

The chapel door opened with a long groan. Dust covered the wooden pews, and the stained-glass windows cast pale colors across the stone floor.

Elena walked directly to the altar.

“Your father said the room was beneath the foundation.”

Gabriel examined the floorboards.

Catherine noticed a small brass plate beneath the front pew. Its surface was engraved with the same pattern as the Romano silver.

She knelt and pressed the key into the narrow slot.

A mechanism clicked.

The altar shifted several inches, revealing a staircase descending into darkness.

Gabriel turned on his flashlight.

“Stay behind me.”

They descended into a low stone chamber containing metal shelves, locked cabinets, and a large steel safe. On the wall hung a photograph of Lorenzo beside a younger Vittorio.

Someone had scratched out Vittorio’s face.

Gabriel approached the safe.

The final key opened it.

Inside lay the original ledger, a collection of audio recordings, and a sealed envelope addressed to Gabriel.

He opened the letter first.

My son,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect the family from the people who believe blood gives them the right to control others. I have spent too many years confusing loyalty with obedience. Do not make the same mistake.

Your uncle believes the family is a kingdom. Your mother believes its reputation must be protected. Both are wrong. A family is not preserved by hiding its sins. It is preserved by giving the next generation the courage to end them.

Gabriel stopped reading.

Catherine touched his shoulder.

He continued.

There is one more truth you must know. The man who ordered Elena’s disappearance was not acting alone. He had help from someone inside the medical clinic, someone who believed a child could be exchanged and a birth record erased without consequence.

The letter ended with a name.

Dr. Samuel Price.

Elena covered her mouth.

“He was the physician who treated me.”

Catherine turned to the ledger.

The records showed that Price had received payments from a private account controlled by Vittorio. But another series of payments led to a company owned by Arthur Bell, Catherine’s adoptive father.

Gabriel frowned.

“Your father was paid too.”

Catherine felt a familiar ache in her chest.

“He told me he was paid to keep me hidden.”

“Perhaps he was paid for more than that.”

She looked at the documents.

A final page contained a list of dates and initials. One entry was circled in red.

The child transfer.

Beside it was the name of a second baby born on the same night.

Catherine stared at the page.

“Why would there be two children?”

Elena’s face went pale.

“Because the clinic recorded two births.”

“But you only had one baby.”

Elena slowly shook her head.

“I thought I did.”

From the staircase above them came the sound of footsteps.

Then a voice echoed through the chamber.

“Put the ledger down.”

May you like

Vittorio stood at the top of the stairs, holding a gun.

And beside him stood Arthur Bell.
