Chapter 19 - THE CHOICE THAT COST EVERYTHING|

The investigation did not end with the gala.

Over the next several weeks, financial records were subpoenaed, shipping terminals were searched, and former employees began cooperating with investigators. Several officials resigned before charges were announced. Others disappeared from public view, hoping distance would become a defense.

Rafael Vega was charged with conspiracy, financial fraud, and multiple offenses connected to the obstruction of an undercover investigation. Isabel faced separate charges after investigators recovered messages showing that she had knowingly passed confidential information between rival organizations.

Victor Hale agreed to testify in exchange for protection for his daughter.

Daniel Reyes provided a sworn statement about the money he had accepted and the instructions he had received. His confession did not erase his betrayal, but it helped establish the chain of decisions that had led to Cristian’s exposure.

Nadia gave her testimony three times.

Each time, she described her brother’s final months without embellishment. She refused to turn him into a saint or herself into a hero.

“He was a person,” she told the prosecutor. “He made mistakes. He got scared. He trusted the wrong people. None of that means someone had the right to sell his life.”

When the hearings ended for the day, Marcos waited outside the courthouse.

“How did it go?” he asked.

“Badly.”

“Did you tell the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then it went as well as it could.”

She looked at him.

“You’ve become very good at sounding like a lawyer.”

“I’ve been spending too much time with them.”

They walked toward the parking lot in silence.

Marcos had made a decision that cost him more than he expected. He had turned over the company records, dismissed employees implicated in the scheme, and agreed to an independent restructuring of Vega Maritime. Some of his legitimate assets would survive. Others would be sold to pay penalties and compensate victims.

His uncle’s empire would not remain untouched.

Neither would his own.

“I’m stepping down as chairman,” he said.

Nadia stopped.

“Why?”

“Because I can’t claim I want a clean company while keeping control of the system that allowed this to happen.”

“That doesn’t make you innocent.”

“I know.”

“And it doesn’t bring Cristian back.”

“I know that too.”

She looked away.

“I spent so long imagining what I would do when I found the people responsible. I thought I’d feel better.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

Marcos waited.

“But I feel less lost.”

He nodded.

“That’s something.”

She studied him.

“What happens to you now?”

“I find out who I am without the company.”

“That sounds uncomfortable.”

“It is.”

For the first time, she smiled without bitterness.

“Good.”

He laughed softly.

Then his expression became serious.

“Nadia, I won’t ask you to trust me because I helped you. You don’t owe me anything.”

“Then what are you asking?”

“To let me know you when there isn’t a murder investigation between us.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

“I can’t promise you anything.”

“I’m not asking for a promise.”

She reached for his hand.

It was a small gesture, uncertain and deliberate.

“Then start with coffee,” she said.

Marcos smiled.

“Coffee I can do.”

They left the courthouse together, not as a criminal boss and his witness, but as two people trying to discover what remained after the lies had been stripped away.

Behind them, the courthouse doors closed.

Ahead, the city continued moving.

And somewhere beyond it, a woman named Elena was still missing.
