Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH AT THE CHARITY GALA|

The Carrera Foundation’s annual charity gala proceeded as planned, despite the fire at the estate and the growing investigation into Vega Maritime.

Isabel insisted on attending.

She wore a black evening gown and a diamond necklace that had belonged to her grandmother. The guests admired her composure. Photographers captured her beside donors and city officials. To anyone who did not know the truth, she looked like a woman determined to rise above a difficult week.

Marcos entered shortly before nine.

Nadia walked beside him, wearing a simple dark-blue dress. Her wound had healed enough for her to move without assistance, though she still felt pain when she turned too quickly.

The room noticed them immediately.

Whispers followed their progress across the marble floor.

Isabel approached with a champagne glass.

“Marcos. I’m glad you came.”

“I thought we should finish our conversation.”

Her eyes moved to Nadia.

“Privately?”

“No.”

For the first time, Isabel looked uncertain.

Marcos turned toward the assembled guests.

“I believe several people here deserve to know why my company has been connected to suspicious transfers and falsified shipping records.”

The music stopped.

A few guests laughed nervously, assuming he was making a joke.

He continued.

“For years, Vega Maritime has been used by people who believed my family’s name would protect them from consequences. I allowed that belief to survive because it was convenient.”

Rafael stood near the stage.

“Marcos, this is not the place.”

“You’re right,” Marcos said. “It should have happened in court.”

He nodded to Evelyn, who stood beside a legal team near the entrance.

Several investigators entered the room.

Isabel’s face went white.

“You can’t do this.”

“I can.”

“You’ll destroy your own company.”

“Perhaps. But I won’t let you destroy another family to protect it.”

Nadia stepped forward.

“My brother, Cristian Reyes, was an undercover investigator. He was exposed because confidential information was sold to people who wanted him silenced.”

She held up the photograph of Cristian and the unidentified woman.

“The records show payments authorized through companies connected to the Carrera family and witnessed by Isabel Carrera. They also show that Rafael Vega approved transfers tied to Cristian’s movements.”

Rafael laughed.

“Copies. Photographs. A grieving sister’s accusations. Is that what you brought?”

“No,” Nadia said. “We brought the original transaction index, the recovered audio, and the bank records your people failed to erase.”

The room fell silent.

Isabel looked toward Rafael.

He did not look back.

That was the moment she understood he would not save her.

She stepped away from him.

“Rafael told me the information would be used to negotiate,” she said.

Nadia stared at her.

“You knew Cristian was in danger.”

“I knew there was an operation. I didn’t know they would kill him.”

“You knew enough to keep quiet.”

Isabel’s eyes filled with tears, but Nadia could not tell whether they were real.

“I was trying to protect my family.”

“You were protecting your future.”

Rafael moved toward a side exit.

Two investigators blocked his path.

“Mr. Vega, we need you to come with us.”

His expression turned vicious.

“You have no idea who you’re arresting.”

Marcos looked at him.

“I’m beginning to.”

As the investigators escorted Rafael away, Isabel stood motionless beneath the chandelier.

For years, she had controlled the room by deciding what everyone was allowed to know.

Now every face was turned toward her.

And for the first time, she had nothing left to hide behind.
