Chapter 7 - The Confrontation|

Arthur Pendelton stood up, adjusting his glasses, a condescending smile spreading across his face.

"Maxwell," Arthur said, gesturing toward the child. "What is the meaning of this? Bringing a child into a executive board meeting? Have you lost your mind entirely?"

Max walked smoothly to the head of the table, pulling out the grand leather chair. He didn't sit in it. Instead, he lifted Lily gently and set her down in the executive chair, placing a box of crayons on the mahogany table before her.

"Draw a picture for me, Lily," Max said softly, his voice full of warmth.

"Okay, Daddy," Lily replied, opening her sketchbook.

The word Daddy echoed off the high glass walls, sending a shockwave through the gathered executives.

Max turned slowly to face Arthur and the board members. His posture was commanding, but the cold, robotic arrogance he had carried for twenty years was gone, replaced by an iron, quiet resolve.

"I apologize for missing yesterday's meeting," Max stated calmly. "I had to handle the most important transaction of my life."

"A transaction?!" Arthur sneered, pointing at Lily. "You torpedoed a multi-million dollar merger for a child! The board demands an explanation, Rochester!"

"My explanation is simple, Arthur," Max said, leaning his hands flat on the table. "For twenty years, I convinced all of you—and myself—that this company was the only thing that mattered. I sacrificed my marriage, my peace, and eight years of my daughter's life to build this empire."

He looked around the table at the wealthy, tired men staring back at him.

"If this board believes that loving my daughter makes me unfit to lead," Max continued, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register, "then you can vote me out right now. I hold fifty-two percent of the voting shares. Try me."
