Chapter 3 - Awakening in the Empire

The first thing I registered was the smell. Gone was the sterile, terrifying scent of the public hospital's ICU, and gone was the suffocating, heavy perfume Vivian pumped through the Hale house. Instead, the air smelled of fresh lavender, clean linen, and the faint, comforting scent of ocean air.
I opened my eyes slowly. I was lying in a massive, sun-drenched bedroom. The walls were painted a soft, calming ivory, and floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. I was back at the Mercer Estate in Malibu.
“She’s waking up,” a gentle voice murmured.
My father was sitting in an armchair by the bed. He looked like he hadn't slept in days. The ruthless titan of industry was gone, replaced entirely by a terrified, exhausted father. Beside him stood Dr. Evans and an entire team of private nurses.
“Lily?” I panicked, trying to sit up, but a sharp pain in my abdomen forced me back down.
“She’s right here, sweetheart. She’s perfect,” my father said quickly, reaching out to hold my hand.
A nurse stepped forward, carrying a beautifully swaddled bundle. She gently placed Lily into my arms. My daughter was sleeping peacefully, her cheeks pink and healthy. The pediatric team had examined her and pronounced her completely perfect.
Tears spilled over my eyelashes and rolled down my cheeks. “I’m sorry, Dad. I’m so sorry.”
My father leaned forward, kissing my forehead. “You have nothing to apologize for, Emma. I’m the one who is sorry. I should never have let you go out there on your own. I should have protected you.”
“I wanted to be loved for me,” I sobbed quietly, holding Lily close. “Mom died because people only saw her money. They used her. I was so terrified of men looking at me and seeing a bank account. Daniel… he seemed so kind when we met at the coffee shop. He seemed like he just wanted me. I thought I had found someone real.”
“There are real people in this world, Emma,” my father said softly. “But Daniel Hale is not one of them. He is a parasite. And parasites must be excised.”
While I spent the next three weeks recovering in absolute luxury, receiving the finest medical care on the planet, the outside world was shifting violently.
Across the city, Daniel was experiencing a living nightmare. The night I left, his "important investors" had arrived exactly on time. But they weren't there to give him money. Unbeknownst to Daniel, the primary capital backing his tech startup came from a venture capital firm that was a hidden subsidiary of Mercer Global.
When the investors arrived, they didn't bring champagne. They brought foreclosure notices.
My father had quietly pulled every single string. Within forty-eight hours, Daniel’s credit lines were frozen. His company was audited and immediately seized for breach of contract. The luxury cars Vivian drove were repossessed in the middle of the night. The bank accounts were drained.
They tried to call me. They tried to show up at the Mercer corporate offices, crying and begging for a meeting, but security dragged them out onto the pavement. Daniel even tried to go to the press, claiming the Mercer family had kidnapped his wife and child, but no media outlet dared to print a word against Alexander Mercer without absolute proof, and my father’s lawyers buried Daniel in injunctions.

I was healing. The stitches dissolved. The fever broke. The hollow, terrified girl who had cowered in Daniel’s kitchen was dying, and in her place, the Mercer Heiress was finally waking up.
