Chapter 2 - The Wrath of the Patriarch

The silence that fell over the sitting room was absolute, heavy, and suffocating. It was the kind of silence that precedes a devastating storm.
My father, Alexander Mercer, did not yell. He didn't have to. A man who controlled a global empire worth billions had long ago learned that a whisper could be far deadlier than a scream. He walked across the imported Persian rug, his custom Italian leather shoes making no sound, until he stood inches away from Daniel.
“I asked you a question,” my father said, his voice as cold and sharp as cracked ice. “Which one of you made my daughter bleed?”
Daniel’s face had drained of all color, leaving him looking like a wax figure of a man. His mouth opened and closed, struggling to form syllables. He looked from my father, to the terrifyingly well-armed security detail at the door, and finally to me, sitting on the sofa clutching Lily.
“Emma?” Daniel choked out, his voice trembling. “What is this? Who… who is this man?”
“This is Alexander Mercer,” Vivian breathed. My mother-in-law was clutching the edge of the marble console table so hard her knuckles were bone-white. She recognized him. Anyone who read the Wall Street Journal or watched the evening news knew the face of the ruthless corporate titan. But her mind was fiercely rejecting the reality in front of her. “Daniel, this has to be a mistake. Emma is an orphan. She grew up in a group home in Ohio. She told us—”
“She told you what you needed to hear so she could find out if you were capable of loving a woman with nothing,” my father interrupted, his eyes locking onto Vivian with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust. He looked down at the puddle of gray, soapy water pooling around my bare, swollen feet. “And I see exactly what you are capable of.”
My father snapped his fingers. Instantly, the private physician and the trauma nurse rushed forward.
“Ms. Mercer, let’s get you stabilized,” Dr. Evans said gently, opening his leather medical kit. He knelt beside the sofa, completely ignoring the expensive silk upholstery as he placed a blood pressure cuff around my arm and gently examined the fresh blood seeping through my dress. “Her pulse is threading. She’s running a severe fever. We need to transport her to the Mercer private medical wing immediately.”
“No!” Daniel suddenly snapped out of his paralysis, taking a step toward me. “You can’t take her! She’s my wife! That’s my daughter!”
Before Daniel could take a second step, the two massive security officers moved, forming an impenetrable wall of muscle and Kevlar between Daniel and the sofa.
“She is your wife on a piece of paper that my legal team is already in the process of incinerating,” my father said, unbuttoning his suit jacket. He carefully removed it and draped the heavy, warm cashmere over my shivering shoulders. “You left her to die in an intensive care unit. You ignored six calls from her doctors. And when she dragged herself back to this house, you stood by while this… creature…” He gestured to Vivian with a look of revulsion, “…threw dirty water on a woman who had just been cut open to deliver your child.”
“I didn't know!” Daniel pleaded, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. He looked at me, tears of sheer terror welling in his eyes. “Emma, honey, please. I didn't know who you were! If I had known you were a Mercer, I would have—”
“You would have faked your love perfectly,” I said. My voice was weak, barely a whisper, but in the dead silence of the room, it carried like a gunshot. I looked at the man I had spent three years desperately trying to please. “You didn't know I was rich, Daniel. But you knew I was bleeding. You knew I was in pain. That should have been enough.”
My father motioned to the silver-haired attorney, Arthur Sterling.
“Mr. Hale,” Arthur said smoothly, pulling a crisp white envelope from his breast pocket and dropping it onto the coffee table. “Consider this formal notice. You are not to contact Ms. Mercer. You are not to approach her. If you so much as look in the direction of her or her daughter, Mercer Global will not just crush your pathetic little startup; we will dismantle your life until you don't even have a shadow left.”
Dr. Evans signaled the security team. Strong, gentle arms lifted me from the sofa. I held Lily tightly against my chest, burying my face in her soft, warm neck.
“Wait! Please! Emma!” Daniel screamed as they carried me toward the door.

I didn't look back. As we walked out into the cool night air and toward the waiting fleet of armored SUVs, I heard the sound of a woman sobbing. It was Vivian, finally realizing that the helpless orphan she had tormented was actually the heiress to an empire—and that her luxurious life was about to violently collapse.
