CHAPTER 1 — THE CALL / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - WHAT MY MOTHER LEFT BEHINDDaniel looked older than the photograph.

Thinner.

Tired.

But unmistakably alive.

He looked at me.

Then at my father.

Then he whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

I couldn't speak.

He stepped inside.

“I never wanted to come back.”

“Then why did you?”

“Because Julian is not the end of this.”

I stared at him.

“What is?”

He handed me a folder.

“Your mother.”

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Letters.

Old legal documents.

And one photograph that made my knees weak.

My mother.

Standing beside Julian.

Years before our wedding.

Before I had ever met him.

Before he had supposedly known who I was.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?”

He answered:

“Your mother introduced Julian to your family.”

My father closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“She believed Julian could protect the family from an internal takeover.”

I looked at my father.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother?”

“She believed she was saving you.”

I shook my head.

“She made him my husband.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the photograph again.

Julian was smiling.

My mother was smiling.

And behind them stood a younger version of my father.

All three of them knew something I didn't.

I turned another page.

There was a contract.

At the bottom was Julian's signature.

And beneath it was a clause.

Upon marriage to Elena Marin, Julian Blackwood would become temporary administrator of the Marin Family Preservation Trust.

I stared.

“He was supposed to control everything.”

“Yes.”

“But he never did.”

My father smiled sadly.

“Because your mother added an amendment.”

I turned the page.

The amendment stated that if Julian committed adultery, concealed assets, or attempted to remove Elena from the estate, his authority would immediately terminate.

Everything would transfer to me.

Every account.

Every property.

Every voting right.

Every trust asset.

I stared at the final line.

The husband who betrays Elena forfeits everything.

I began to laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because suddenly every piece fit.

Julian hadn't destroyed my life.

He had activated the trap my mother had built for him.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother knew exactly what kind of man he was.”

I closed the folder.

“And now?”

My father smiled.

“Now, Elena, you decide what happens next.”

I looked toward the window.

Snow continued falling over the estate Julian once believed would belong to another woman.

Harrison was asleep upstairs.

My son.

My name.

My life.

Mine.

I thought about the empty nursery.

The Christmas tree.

The envelope on Julian's desk.

The first moment he realized I had left.

He had believed the consequence was losing his wife.

He had been wrong.

The consequence was discovering that the woman he betrayed had never been powerless.

She had simply been patient.

And patience, I had learned, was dangerous when paired with evidence.

Julian wanted to erase my surname.

Instead, he erased his own future.

And when morning came, I would begin rebuilding everything he had spent years trying to steal.

Not as Mrs. Blackwood.

Not as someone's wife.

May you like

But as Elena Marin.

The woman he should have feared from the beginning.
