Chapter 6 - The Eviction of Barbara

The following afternoon, while Bradley sat in a concrete holding cell at the Denver County Jail unable to post his five-hundred-thousand-dollar cash bail, I accompanied the county sheriff’s team to the gated Scottsdale country club community in Arizona.

Standing on the manicured lawn outside the four-bedroom luxury villa was Barbara, dressed in her designer tennis outfit, holding her small lapdog in pure disbelief as two movers loaded her antique furniture onto a transport truck.

"You spiteful, vindictive witch!" Barbara shrieked, running toward the driveway as my town car pulled up. "This is my home! Bradley bought this house for me!"

I stepped out of the vehicle, wearing dark sunglasses and an ivory trench coat, holding the court-ordered civil forfeiture writ.

"Bradley bought this house with eight hundred thousand dollars stolen from my family's operating funds, Barbara," I stated calmly. "The bank has seized the title to satisfy his criminal restitution. You have until five o'clock to remove your personal clothing."

"My son will destroy you in divorce court!" Barbara screamed, her voice cracking with fury. "He has rights! You were nothing before you joined our family!"

"I was the Chief Executive Officer of Vance Logistics before I ever laid eyes on your son, Barbara," I replied, looking down at her with cold pity. "And while your son sits in a state penitentiary for the next seven years, you will be moving into a one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Phoenix, living on your modest pension."

Barbara’s aristocratic facade completely shattered. She sank onto the grass beside her luggage, weeping bitter, helpless tears as her country club neighbors watched the public eviction from their golf carts.

I stepped back into my car and closed the door.

The debt had been collected in full.
