Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH|

I had imagined many ways my marriage might end.

I had never imagined discovering that a woman who had worked for my husband for eight weeks might know more about my financial life than I did.

Khloe's message remained on my phone. I could have ignored it, blocked her, and left the investigation to the lawyers. But I needed to understand whether she was merely a participant in Nathan's scheme or someone with her own agenda.

Rebecca strongly advised against meeting her alone.

"She has already demonstrated a willingness to lie in public," Rebecca said. "If she wants to provide information, she can do it through counsel."

I agreed.

We arranged a formal interview in a conference room at Rebecca's office. Khloe arrived with a lawyer and a large leather handbag. She wore a dark navy suit, and her expression was controlled.

She sat opposite me.

"You look better," she said, glancing at the dressing on my collarbone.

"I've had medical treatment."

"I didn't mean for that to happen."

"Then why did you lift the tray?"

Her lawyer shifted in his seat.

Khloe's cheeks reddened.

"I was angry."

"Because I mentioned the audit?"

"Because you treated me like I was nothing."

"You were a junior executive secretary with unauthorized access to a restricted investor area."

"You think your title makes you better than everyone."

"No. I think access controls exist for a reason."

Rebecca interrupted before the conversation could deteriorate.

"We're here to discuss the documents and transactions you may have knowledge of. If you wish to provide information, please answer the questions directly."

Khloe looked at her lawyer, then nodded.

She admitted she had helped prepare invoices for Asterion Advisory. Nathan had told her the company was handling urgent consulting work related to the clean-grid project. She had never visited the alleged warehouse and had never seen equipment delivered.

"Did you know the invoices were false?" Rebecca asked.

Khloe stared at the table.

"At first, no."

"And later?"

"I started asking questions."

"What happened?"

"Nathan told me the details were above my pay grade. He said the board had approved everything and that Sarah was handling the operational side."

I looked at her.

"Did you believe him?"

"I wanted to."

"Why?"

Her composure cracked.

"Because he told me I was different. He said he trusted me more than anyone in the company. He promised I'd be promoted after the financing closed."

"So you helped him prepare invoices."

"I followed instructions."

"Did you create or arrange the false authorization records?"

"No. Peter handled the systems."

"Did you know someone was using my credentials?"

Khloe hesitated.

Her lawyer leaned toward her, but she raised a hand.

"I knew there were questions about the approval certificates. Nathan told me you had approved the payments and then forgotten the details because you were overwhelmed."

"That doesn't make sense. You knew I ran operations."

"I knew you were careful. But Nathan said the transactions were part of a plan to restructure the company before the financing deal."

"Did he tell you to throw coffee at me?"

Her eyes flickered.

"No."

"Did he tell you to approach me with a tray?"

"He said I should make you look emotional in front of Marcus."

The room fell silent.

Khloe pressed her lips together, as though she wished she could pull the words back.

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Please explain exactly what he said."

"He told me Sarah would probably challenge the financing rider. He said Marcus needed to see her as unstable and difficult. He said if she made a scene, the board would question her judgment."

"And the coffee?"

"I thought if I embarrassed her, she'd leave. I didn't think she'd get burned that badly."

"You lifted a tray holding two cups of hot coffee," I said. "What did you think would happen?"

Khloe looked up, eyes shining.

"I thought you'd finally stop looking down on me."

I felt no satisfaction. Only a deep, exhausted disgust.

"Did Nathan know about the Miller Global amendment?"

Khloe's expression changed.

"Yes."

"Did you attend the meeting at Northstar?"

She looked at her lawyer again.

This time, he said, "My client will answer."

Khloe swallowed.

"I attended the meeting. Nathan said the amendment had to be finalized before you returned from overseas. Peter said the system would preserve the original approval record. Nathan told him to make sure the final packet showed your authorization."

"Did you see him create a signature?"

"No."

"Did you see him direct anyone to create one?"

She hesitated long enough for the answer to become clear.

"I heard him say the documents had to be made to look like you'd reviewed them."

Rebecca asked no further questions that day. She told Khloe's lawyer that any documents or recordings should be preserved and produced through the appropriate process.

As Khloe stood to leave, she turned toward me.

"I know you hate me."

"I don't have to hate you to hold you accountable."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You don't understand. Nathan said if I didn't cooperate, he'd make sure I took the blame for everything."

I held her gaze.

"Then you should have told the truth before you tried to destroy me."

After she left, Rebecca received a secure email from Khloe's attorney.

It contained a voice recording.

The file name was simple:

NATHAN_FINAL_INSTRUCTIONS.m4a

Rebecca played it once, then stopped.

She looked at me.

"Sarah, before we listen to the rest, I need you to understand something. This could change the entire investigation."

She pressed play again.

Nathan's voice filled the room.

"Once the Sterling money clears, nobody will be able to trace where the first eighteen million went."

Then came a second voice.

May you like

My husband's.

"And if Sarah challenges the approvals, the records will show she signed every page."
