Chapter 2 - THE SIGNATURE I NEVER GAVE|

The hotel medic guided me into a private conference suite away from the ballroom. The coffee had soaked through my dress, and the skin along my collarbone was already turning red. Every movement hurt, but the pain was nothing compared with the message glowing on my phone.

A private company.

A second ledger.

My signature.

I had spent five years building Vanguard's internal controls. Every significant transfer required documented authorization, dual approval, and an audit trail. Even Nathan couldn't legitimately move hundreds of millions of dollars without triggering a review.

Unless someone had found a way around the system.

"Mrs. Vance, I need you to keep the affected area uncovered while I assess the burn," the medic said gently.

I nodded, barely hearing her.

"Could you give me five minutes before anyone lets my husband in?"

"Of course."

I opened the secure messaging application on my phone and contacted Daniel Cho, Vanguard's external compliance director.

Sarah: I saw your message. What private company?

His reply came almost immediately.

Daniel: Northstar Strategic Holdings. Registered six months ago. We've identified transfers from three Vanguard subsidiaries. The preliminary total is $18.6 million.

My stomach tightened.

Sarah: Who authorized them?

Daniel: The electronic records show CEO override credentials and your digital approval.

Sarah: I did not approve them.

There was a pause.

Daniel: I suspected that might be the case. The approval certificates don't match your usual authentication pattern. Someone may have duplicated your credentials or used an administrator's recovery function.

I stared at the screen.

Someone had not merely stolen money. Someone had built a paper trail designed to implicate me.

And my husband was at the center of it.

The door opened.

Nathan walked in, followed by Khloe.

I immediately locked my phone.

"She doesn't need to be here," I said.

Khloe's face tightened.

"I'm the one who was attacked by you."

I looked at her for several seconds.

"You threw two cups of scalding coffee at me in front of four hundred witnesses."

"You're twisting everything."

"Then the security footage will settle it."

Her lips parted, but no words came out.

Nathan shut the door.

"Both of you need to calm down. The gala is still underway, Marcus is waiting, and the board is asking questions."

I almost laughed.

My skin was burning, my company's money might have been stolen, and his primary concern was the evening's schedule.

"Did you authorize the transfers to Northstar Strategic Holdings?" I asked.

His expression changed so quickly that I knew I had hit something real.

"What transfers?"

"The ones Daniel Cho found. Eighteen-point-six million dollars routed through Vanguard subsidiaries."

Khloe looked at Nathan.

He noticed.

"Sarah, this is neither the time nor the place to discuss internal accounting."

"Then answer one question. Did you authorize them?"

"I sign dozens of transactions every week."

"That isn't an answer."

He stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"You're upset. You're hurt. You're looking for someone to blame because Khloe made a mistake."

"An expensive mistake?"

"Don't be dramatic."

I felt the last fragile thread of our marriage snap.

"Someone used my digital credentials."

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

"Are you accusing me of forging your signature?"

"I'm asking whether you know how it happened."

"And I'm telling you to stop making accusations without evidence."

Khloe folded her arms.

"Maybe the audit will prove you're the one who approved everything. Maybe you're just embarrassed because your little kingdom isn't as perfect as you think."

Nathan turned toward her.

"Khloe, enough."

It was the first time he had told her to stop.

She looked stunned.

For a moment, I wondered whether he was trying to protect me. Then I saw his eyes flick toward my phone.

He wasn't worried about my pain.

He was worried about what I knew.

The medic returned with instructions for follow-up treatment. I stood carefully, took my folio, and walked toward the door.

Nathan blocked my path.

"You're not going back into that ballroom and making a public accusation."

"Move."

"Sarah, I'm trying to protect you."

"From what?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped around him.

Outside the suite, Marcus Sterling was waiting with Daniel Cho. Daniel held a slim laptop against his chest, his expression grim.

"Mrs. Vance," Daniel said, "we've confirmed that Northstar has received money from Vanguard."

"And the signature?"

He looked directly at me.

"The signature file was created using a credential recovery process that only three people could initiate."

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then he named them.

"Yourself, Nathan Vance, and the administrator who manages the CEO's executive security account."

I looked past him toward my husband.

Nathan was standing in the doorway.

And Khloe, who had been silent for nearly a minute, suddenly whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"The administrator doesn't work for Nathan anymore."

May you like

She swallowed.

"He works for me."
