Chapter 1 - The Panic in the HangarThe private aviation hangar of Apex Global was spotless, its polished white floors reflecting the brilliant glow of overhead LED lights. Multi-million-dollar Gulfstreams sat lined up like dormant beasts. But inside the luxury terminal, panic was spreading like spilled oil.

Victoria Hale, the ruthless CEO of Hale Enterprises, gripped the edge of the dispatch desk so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her father, Arthur Hale, had suffered a massive stroke in Denver less than an hour ago. The doctors said the next couple of hours were critical.
"I need a pilot in ten minutes!" Victoria’s sharp voice sliced through the air.
Greg, the operations manager, frantically scrolled through his computer screen, sweat glistening on his forehead. "Miss Hale, Carter is in Tokyo, Jensen is grounded with a fever, and Thompson called in sick. Every single backup pilot is out of range."
"Then pull someone off vacation! My father is dying!" Victoria snapped, her voice cracking for a split second before she regained her icy composure. "Get me in the air!"
Across the room, Marcus Hayes stopped mopping near the glass doors.
To the world, Marcus was just a thirty-two-year-old janitor in blue coveralls who picked up trash and left precisely at 3:00 PM to pick up his nine-year-old son, Ethan. But beneath his humble exterior lay a past no one at Apex Global knew about: Marcus was once an elite military test pilot who had logged thousands of hours in high-risk jet prototypes.

Six years ago, after a tragic test-flight accident killed his co-pilot and his wife passed away from illness months later, Marcus grounded himself forever. He chose safety and anonymity so Ethan would never risk losing his only remaining parent.
Now, looking at Victoria's cracking facade, Marcus recognized the desperate look of someone about to lose everything.
