Chapter 4 - Who Was the Man?

|

"I didn't put it there!" Diana shrieked, her voice cracking as she backed up against the marble bar counter, knocking over a row of crystal decanters. "Look at me, Marcus! Why would I bring something like that into your penthouse on our engagement night?! Someone is framing me! Ask the child—children make up crazy stories all the time!"

Instead of shouting at Diana, I walked calmly across the marble floor to where Rosa stood holding Lily near the service door.

I knelt down on both knees in my custom tuxedo so I wouldn't tower over the little girl. Lily buried her face shyly against the side of her mother’s neck for a second, then peeked out at me over Barnaby the rabbit’s one button eye.

"Miss Lily," I said softly, keeping my voice as warm and steady as if we were sitting in a park. "You did a very brave thing telling me about what was under that table. You saved my life tonight. Can you tell me one more thing?"

Lily nodded slowly, sucking on her lower lip.

"Where were you when you saw Miss Diana talking to the man?" I asked.

"By the cold doors with the sleepy bottles," Lily said, pointing a tiny finger down the service hallway toward the climate-controlled glass wine cellar adjacent to the coat room. "Barnaby fell behind the big laundry basket with the white sheets. I was getting him out when the pretty lady in the shiny dress came in."

Behind me, Diana lunged forward a step. "She’s lying! Her mother coached her to say this to extort us!"

"Take one more step toward the child, Diana, and I’ll have Cole cuff you to the radiator," I said without turning around.

I kept my eyes gently on Lily.

"And the man who gave Miss Diana the black package, sweetheart," I asked quietly. "Did you see his face?"

"No, the basket was too tall," Lily said, frowning as she tried to remember. "I only saw his shiny shoes under the curtain, and his hand when he gave her the black box. He had a gold bird on his sleeve button, and he smelled like the smoky medicine Grandpa puts on his pipe."

A gold bird on his sleeve button. And pipe tobacco—or Latakia English cigar leaf.

Slowly, I stood up to my full height and turned back toward the sixty guests crowded around the dining room.

Every man in the room instinctively glanced down at his own wrists—except for two people.

Standing near the far wine cabinet, dressed in a black sommelier’s vest, was a tall catering attendant I had never seen before tonight, who was currently sliding his left hand behind his back while edging silently toward the kitchen swing door.

And sitting three seats down from Diana’s empty chair at the VIP end of the dining table was Julian Vance—my fifty-eight-year-old Chief Operating Officer, my dead father’s former law partner, and the man who smoked imported English Latakia pipe blend in his corner office every Friday afternoon.

Julian’s French cuffs were fastened with antique eighteen-karat goldphoenix cufflinks—the exact emblem of his Yale secret society.

Before I could even speak Julian’s name, the fake sommelier by the wine cabinet bolted through the kitchen swing door at a dead sprint.

"Cole, the waiter!" I barked. "Don't let him reach the freight lift!"
