Chapter 18 - The Third Partition

|

Two minutes later, inside my locked study, Elena Park sat in front of the air-gapped diagnostic laptop where the titanium MARCUS ELLISON — POST-MORTEM drive was still connected.

"There is a hidden third partition buried inside the unallocated sector space of the drive, Mr. Ellison," Elena said, her fingers flying across the keys as I stood behind her chair. "When I scanned it earlier, it looked like random white-noise padding placed there by the manufacturer. It requires a six-digit numeric cipher just to mount the volume."

"Type in 10-14-92," I instructed quietly.

Elena typed the six numbers and hit enter.

Instantly, the white-noise encryption wall dissolved on the monitor, revealing a deeply buried master banking and intelligence ledger that neither Julian Vance nor Diana Caldwell even knew existed on the drive they had carried into my penthouse.

Wait—why did the cipher 10-14-92 unlock a secret partition on a drive supplied by Viktor Kael’s Geneva syndicate, Valkyrie Maritime Trust?

Because October 14, 1992, was the birthday of my younger brother, Lucas Ellison.

Four years ago, Lucas—a brilliant cryptographic engineer who had designed the original security architecture for Ellison Global’s satellite shipping network—had supposedly died when his twin-engine Cessna vanished into a winter storm off the coast of Nantucket after he uncovered a massive international money-laundering ring operating inside our European port terminals. The Coast Guard had found only a floating wheel strut and an oil slick.

I had mourned him for four years.

"Look at the author signature on the root code of this drive, Mr. Ellison," Elena whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the binary watermark glowing in the upper corner of the screen. "Julian Vance didn't hire Viktor Kael’s syndicate in Geneva on his own. Somebody inside Valkyrie Maritime Approached Julian three months ago, fed him the chemical formula for the potassium blocker, and handed him this exact titanium drive to plant under Diana’s chair."

"Why would someone build the murder plot against me, only to show up in my basement at six-fifteen tonight and send a three-year-old girl into the dining room to stop it?" I asked aloud, staring at the screen.

"Because the target tonight was never you, Boss," Elena said, opening the hidden ledger file on the third partition. "Look at what this drive actually did the moment I plugged it into our diagnostic port to extract Julian’s files thirty minutes ago. It didn't transfer your shares. It used your administrative key to trigger an automatic, irreversible sovereign asset seizure against all twelve board members of Valkyrie Maritime Trust—and look who held Seat Number Four on Valkyrie’s secret board."

I leaned closer to the monitor.

Listed on the encrypted Zurich shareholder registry—right alongside Julian Vance and three European shipping oligarchs—was the name of my own late father, Arthur Ellison, dated six months before Lucas’s plane crashed off Nantucket.
