Chapter 16 - The Voice on the Recording| The breakthrough came from a security camera that was supposed to have been offline.

A technician discovered that the camera above the lower service corridor had continued recording even after the power interruption. Its backup battery had preserved the footage, and the system had stored a separate audio track from the nearby maintenance desk.
Lena brought the file to Julian early Friday morning.
“We have someone entering the corridor at 8:01.”
“Puit?”
“No.”
She played the recording.
The image was grainy but clear enough to identify a woman in a cream coat. She used a keycard at the service entrance, then disappeared from view.
Vanessa Vale.
Julian watched the clip twice.
“What was she doing there?”
“We don't know. The audio is more useful.”
Lena increased the volume.
At first, there was only the hum of machinery. Then a door opened.
Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.
“You said the panel would be disabled for two minutes.”
A man's voice answered.
“I told you I could interrupt the system. I didn't say anything about a full shutdown.”
“Then fix it.”
“Not while the backup generator is cycling.”
A pause followed.
“Did you remove the file?” Vanessa asked.
“Which file?”
“The maintenance report. The one showing the safety complaints.”
The man swore softly.
“I told you I couldn't get into the system.”
“You said you could.”
“I said I would try.”
The recording ended.
Julian sat motionless.
“Can we identify the man?”
“Not yet. The voice may belong to a contractor, but we need confirmation.”
“Send the recording to legal. Preserve the original.”
Lena nodded.
“There's something else. Vanessa's keycard was issued for executive access. She entered the corridor shortly before the outage, then left through the east stairwell.”
Julian rubbed his forehead.
“Bring her in.”
Vanessa arrived two hours later, looking composed enough to attend a charity luncheon.
She listened to the recording without moving.
When it ended, she folded her hands.
“I don't recognize the voice.”
“You were in the service corridor.”
“I was checking on a maintenance issue.”
“Why didn't you report the conversation?”
“I didn't know there was a serious problem.”
“You asked whether a file had been removed.”
Vanessa glanced at Lena.
“I was referring to an ordinary maintenance document.”
“Which document?”
“I don't recall.”
Julian's expression hardened.
“You entered a restricted area, discussed disabling a safety system, and asked about deleting a report. What exactly am I supposed to believe?”
Vanessa's composure cracked.
“You're making a terrible mistake.”
“Then explain the recording.”
“I was trying to protect the company.”
“From what?”
“From you.”
Julian stared at her.
Vanessa leaned forward.
“You've spent weeks investigating a restaurant because a waitress refused to let a manager discipline a junior employee. You think you're being noble, but you have no idea how quickly rumors can destroy a business.”
“So you disabled the safety system?”
“I didn't touch the panel.”
“Did you instruct someone else to?”
She said nothing.
“Did you ask for the maintenance report to be removed?”
Vanessa's eyes shifted toward the door.
That was enough to change the room.
Julian stood.
“Your access is suspended. Legal will contact you.”
“You can't treat me like a criminal.”
“Then stop behaving like someone who believes the rules don't apply to her.”
Vanessa rose, trembling with anger.
“This isn't over.”
“No,” Julian said. “It isn't.”
After she left, Lena closed the door.
“Should we notify the authorities?”
“Legal will determine the appropriate next steps, but the safety issue cannot wait.”
Julian looked at the frozen image on the screen.
Vanessa had tried to protect Puit, or herself, or both. But the recording revealed something else: she had been worried about a maintenance report before the outage occurred.
Someone had known the system was vulnerable.
May you like
Someone had wanted a record to disappear.
And Julian suspected that the most important secret in the building was still hidden.
