Chapter 12 - The Archive Under the Warehouse| Isabella was found the following morning in a hotel room in New Jersey.

She was frightened but physically unharmed. According to her attorney, she had left Manhattan voluntarily after receiving threatening messages. She refused to identify the sender publicly, though she gave the messages to investigators.

The brass key remained with Rachel.

No one attempted to enter the archive without legal authority.

Three days later, investigators obtained a warrant to examine the old shipping office. Adrian agreed to cooperate and provided records showing that the building had been used for document storage long after the company moved its operations elsewhere.

I went with Rachel to the perimeter but remained outside while the search took place.

I had spent too much of my life waiting in rooms where powerful people made decisions about me. This time, I would not pretend that being close to the action made me responsible for controlling it.

Near sunset, an investigator approached Rachel.

They had found the archive.

Inside the locked cabinet were original contracts, payment records, and a collection of tapes stored in metal cases. Several documents appeared to have been altered. Others showed payments to Harrow Security and Northstar Holdings.

The investigators also found a folder labeled E. BENNETT.

I felt my knees weaken when Rachel told me.

The folder contained copies of my mother's correspondence with Dominic Romano. The letters showed that she had warned him about the missing funds and offered to provide evidence if he agreed to testify.

One letter, dated three days before his death, contained a single paragraph.

I will meet you at the warehouse on Friday. I will bring the original ledger. I cannot continue pretending that silence is the same as loyalty.

Dominic died that Friday.

My mother died less than two weeks later.

The sequence was chilling, but it did not prove that their deaths were connected.

The investigators found something else in the archive: a duplicate of the missing tape invoice. The notation identifying the recipient of the reel had been crossed out, but the pressure marks beneath the ink suggested that the original name could still be recovered.

A forensic specialist began examining it.

Meanwhile, Adrian received a call from his attorney.

The court had authorized access to the paternity affidavit.

Adrian asked me to accompany him to the lawyer's office. I agreed, with Rachel present.

The document was short.

Dominic Romano had acknowledged that Adrian was biologically his son, but he had also named another man as a legal guardian and instructed the family attorney to keep the arrangement confidential.

The other man's name was Samuel Moretti.

Victor's older brother.

I stared at the page.

“Why would Dominic name Victor's brother as your guardian?”

Adrian looked as though the room had tilted.

“Samuel died when I was a child. I barely remember him.”

“Could he have been involved in the business?”

“My father trusted him.”

Rachel pointed to a second page.

“This affidavit doesn't establish a different biological father. It establishes a confidential guardianship arrangement. We need to understand why it was created.”

Adrian nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on the name.

“I remember a man who used to visit my mother,” he said. “He brought me toy boats. My father told me he was a family friend.”

“Was it Samuel?”

“I don't know.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Victor always said Samuel died in an accident. He never let anyone talk about him.”

I thought of the sentence in Dominic's letter.

If the boy ever learns the truth, make sure Victor cannot reach him first.

The affidavit did not explain the warning.

It only made it more frightening.

That evening, Rachel received a call from the forensic specialist.

The pressure marks on the tape invoice had revealed a name.

The reel had been transferred not to Victor Moretti, but to a private recording studio registered under Samuel Moretti's name.

The studio had closed years earlier.

Its last recorded owner was now living under a different name in another state.

And according to the specialist, he had requested a copy of the original invoice just six weeks ago.

Someone had been searching for the tape long before I found the ledger.

Someone who might still be alive.
