Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO REFUSED TO DENY IT|

The ballroom fell silent.

Callum did not reach for the microphone.

He did not threaten Grant or demand that the screens be switched off.

Instead, he walked toward the stage.

"What exactly are you accusing me of?" he asked.

Grant lifted the folder.

"You knew Victor had taken money from the freight deal. You signed the settlement that allowed him to keep control. And you did nothing when Elise disappeared."

The guests began whispering again.

Callum looked toward the investigators who had arrived at the venue after the screen incident.

"Those records are under review," he said. "I will provide the relevant documents and answer their questions."

Grant laughed bitterly.

"That's your answer?"

"It's the truthful one."

"You could deny it."

"I won't deny a decision I actually made."

Rowan felt a painful mixture of admiration and fear.

Callum was not pretending to be innocent of every mistake.

He was admitting that he had made a decision that deserved scrutiny.

But he was also refusing to accept allegations that had not been proven.

Grant opened the folder and displayed a copy of the settlement agreement.

"This proves he knew what was happening."

"It proves I signed a settlement agreement," Callum replied. "It does not establish that I knew every detail of Victor's conduct or that I authorized the disputed transactions."

"You're hiding behind legal language."

"No. I'm distinguishing what the document says from what you're claiming it says."

The investigators asked that the original records be preserved and that the public presentation stop while the evidence was examined.

The event organizers complied.

Grant looked furious.

"You can't bury this."

"No one is burying it," Rowan said.

He turned toward her.

"You should be careful. You don't know what kind of man you're defending."

"I'm not defending anyone. I'm asking for the truth."

"You think he loves you?"

Callum stepped forward, but Rowan raised her hand.

"Don't."

He stopped immediately.

Rowan looked directly at Grant.

"You don't get to use my feelings as a weapon. If Callum made mistakes, the evidence should establish what they were. If he broke the law, he should face the consequences. But you don't get to turn a charity event into a trial because you want everyone to stop looking at your own decisions."

Grant's face flushed.

For a moment, he seemed ready to argue.

Then he looked at the folder and said nothing.

The event continued after the organizers removed the unauthorized display and the investigators collected the relevant material. The hospital's fundraising committee issued a statement explaining that the event would proceed while the incident was assessed.

Rowan returned to the kitchen.

Her staff were frightened, but they had remained professional throughout the disruption.

Luis approached her.

"Are we finishing service?"

She looked toward the ballroom.

"Yes. The guests paid for dinner, and the hospital needs the donations. We finish what we came here to do."

The team returned to work.

By midnight, the last course had been served.

The event raised enough money to fund several months of the hospital's family support program.

Rowan should have felt proud.

Instead, she stood outside the kitchen, staring at the floor.

Callum found her there.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"For what?"

"For bringing my history into your life without giving you the full picture."

She looked at him.

"You didn't bring Victor to the gala. You didn't create the documents displayed tonight. But you did make a decision years ago that allowed unanswered questions to remain."

"Yes."

"And I need to know what happened before I can decide what our future looks like."

"I understand."

She swallowed.

"I love you, Callum. But I can't build a relationship on secrets."

His expression softened.

"Then I won't ask you to."

He handed her a folder.

It contained the settlement agreement, the relevant correspondence, and a timeline prepared by his legal team.

"I've authorized the release of these records through the proper channels," he said. "The investigators can examine them. If the evidence shows that I was wrong, I will accept responsibility."

Rowan took the folder.

She wanted to hold him.

She also wanted to step away.

For the first time, she understood that loving someone did not mean choosing between loyalty and truth.

It meant demanding both.

Callum touched her hand.

"Whatever you decide, I won't punish you for it."

She looked at him through tears.

May you like

"That's all I ever wanted from Grant."

Then she walked out into the cool night air, carrying the documents that might finally reveal whether the man she loved had become the man she feared.
