Chapter 7 - THE SECRET MY FATHER LEFT BEHIND

My father had not died in an accident.
The original investigation had been flawed.
Witness statements were missing.
Evidence had disappeared.
And the mechanic who inspected the vehicle had later vanished.
His name was Harold Bell.
Detective Hayes found him living under a different name in another state.
We spoke by video call.
The old man looked terrified.
“I knew someone had tampered with the car,” he said.
“Why didn't you tell the police?”
“Because I was threatened.”
“By Daniel?”
Harold looked away.
“Daniel was there.”
“And my father?”
“He knew.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“What did he know?”
Harold hesitated.
“Your father discovered that several clients were being robbed.”
“By Daniel?”
“Daniel was part of it.”
“Who else?”
Harold stared at the screen.
Then said:
“Your father believed the network reached into law enforcement.”
Captain Lane.
I thought of the photograph.
My father's investigation had been buried.
The second account had been created to preserve evidence.
And the money had remained untouched for years.
Until Abigail discovered it.
I turned toward her.
She sat silently beside me.
“Why did your father know about my father's account?”
She shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Did he ever talk about my father?”
“No.”
“Did he know Daniel?”
She hesitated.
“Yes.”
I felt the room become colder.
“How?”
“My father worked with him.”
“On what?”
“Investments.”
I stared at her.
“Did you know your father stole money?”
“No.”
“Did you know he was involved in fraud?”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I swear.”
I believed her.
For the first time, I believed her.
But believing her did not erase what she had done.
After the call ended, Mom entered the room.
She carried an old box.
“I should have given you this years ago.”
Inside was a letter.
My father's handwriting.
I opened it.
Samuel,
If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.
My hands began to shake.
There is money in an account that cannot be touched until you are thirty-five. It is not a gift. It is evidence.
I continued reading.
If anyone tries to access it before then, assume they know about the investigation.
I looked at Mom.
“I'm thirty-five.”
She nodded.
The account had become accessible.
That was why everyone had suddenly moved.
Daniel.
Abigail.
Ethan.
Captain Lane.
They had waited for the date.
My father had known this might happen.
The letter continued.
Trust no one who tells you that your mother is confused.
I looked at Mom.
She was crying.
My father had known.
He had known that someone might try to silence her.
The final paragraph was the worst.
The person who helped Daniel access the first account was someone inside our family.
I stared at the words.
“Who?”
Mom shook her head.
“I never found out.”
Then the doorbell rang.
Detective Hayes entered.
“We found Captain Lane.”
“Where?”
“In a motel.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Did he confess?”
Hayes looked at me.
“He says Abigail's father paid him.”
I turned toward my wife.
She covered her mouth.
“What?”
Hayes continued.
“He says the money continued for years.”
“Why?”
“To make sure the original investigation stayed closed.”
I felt sick.
“Does he know who killed my father?”
“He says Daniel ordered it.”
“And Abigail's father?”
“Helped arrange it.”
Abigail began sobbing.
I looked at her.
She had lost her father years ago.
She had believed he was a successful businessman.
She had never known the truth.
But then Hayes placed another document on the table.
A bank transfer.
A payment made from Abigail's father's company to Daniel.
The date was three days before my father's death.
Abigail stared at it.
“I didn't know.”
I believed her.
But the truth had already destroyed the life she thought she understood.
That night, we received another message.
This time, it came from Ethan.
I know where the second file is.
A second message followed.
But if I tell you, they will kill me.
I replied:
Then tell me before they find you.
His answer came immediately.
Tomorrow. Church parking lot. 8 a.m.
May you like
At 7:52 the next morning, Ethan was found unconscious in his car.
And the second file was gone.
