Chapter 8 - The Crimson Sunset over Red Rock

Two days after the arrest of Senator Whitmore, the morning news broadcasts across the nation aired a full, unedited retraction and public apology from the Nevada State Medical Board, alongside a formal statement from the governor clearing Noel Ashford of all false charges and restoring her standing with highest honors.

That evening, Knox drove them out past the city limits toward the jagged, copper-red cliffs of Red Rock Canyon.

The sun was sinking low behind the desert mountains, painting the sky in violent shades of crimson, gold, and deep purple. They parked the car on a quiet overlook, stepping out onto the warm stone ledge that looked out over the endless expanse of the Mojave Desert.

Emmy sat in the back seat of the car, fast asleep with her stuffed rabbit after a long day of playing in the estate’s gardens, leaving Knox and Noel alone in the quiet dusk.

Noel leaned against the metal railing of the overlook, the desert wind gently lifting her dark blonde hair.

“It still feels like a dream,” Noel whispered softly, watching the last sliver of the sun slip behind the horizon. “For so long, I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life running from shadows. And now... my record is clean. My license is back. My life is my own again.”

Knox stood beside her, resting his elbows on the railing, turning his head to watch the way the desert light caught her profile.

“You were never running from shadows, Noel,” Knox said, his voice deep and steady. “You were just walking through the dark, waiting for the right door to open.”

Noel turned her head, meeting his intense silver-gray eyes. “And what door opened for me?”

Knox reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-covered box. He didn't kneel—that wasn't his style. Instead, he simply opened the box, revealing a magnificent ring set with a rare, flawless emerald surrounded by a halo of brilliant-cut diamonds.

Noel’s breath hitched in her throat.

“I don't offer second chances lightly, Noel,” Knox said, his voice dropping into a raw, gravelly intensity that made her pulse race. “And I don't give my heart to just anyone. You walked into a house of blood and iron with a ballpoint pen and saved my entire world. I want you to stay in that house forever. Not as a guest. Not as an employee. As my wife. As Emmy’s mother.”

Tears spilled over Noel’s lashes, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy.

“Yes,” Noel whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. “Yes, Knox. A thousand times yes.”

Knox slid the emerald ring onto her finger, pulling her into his arms, crushing her against his broad chest as his lips crashed down onto hers in a fierce, passionate kiss that tasted of the desert wind and an unbreakable future.
