Chapter 15 - Isabella's Last Secret

|
Lorenzo drove to Boston alone.
Elara wanted to go with him, but he asked her to remain with Toby and her father while Detective Collins interviewed the contractor.
He did not order her to stay.
That mattered.
Still, she watched the car disappear through the gates with a knot in her stomach.
Isabella answered her son's call on the second ring.
“I was wondering when you would ask,” she said.
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
“Did you authorize the release of Elara's mother's medical records?”
“Yes.”
The answer hit harder than he expected.
“Why?”
“Because I thought it would force the investigation to move.”
“You thought exposing a dead woman's private medical history would help?”
“I thought the records would reveal that someone had accessed her file.”
“You could have told Detective Collins.”
“I did. She said she needed proof.”
“So you leaked it to a senator?”
“No. I sent it to an investigative journalist who promised to protect the source. I did not know Shaw would obtain it.”
Lorenzo paced the small apartment.
“You put Elara's family in danger.”
“I know.”
“You helped the people trying to silence her.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Isabella's voice trembled.
“Because I have spent fifteen years watching your father bury the truth. I was tired of waiting for someone to do the right thing.”
“You don't get to sacrifice someone else's dignity because you're tired.”
The words fell into silence.
Isabella began to cry.
“I know.”
Lorenzo leaned against the wall.
He had imagined confronting his mother with anger. He had expected explanations, perhaps even another argument about his father.
He had not expected her to sound so small.
“I thought if the public saw the records, they would demand answers,” she said. “I thought it would protect Elara's mother from being forgotten.”
“Instead, it gave Shaw a weapon.”
“Yes.”
He looked out the window.
“Did you know my father used my signature?”
“I suspected.”
“Did you know he knew Elara's mother was in danger?”
“Yes.”
Lorenzo turned.
“And you said nothing?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of him?”
“Of losing you.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You lost me anyway.”
Isabella covered her mouth.
“I am sorry.”
He wanted to reject the apology.
He wanted to tell her that sorry could not restore the years he had spent believing she had abandoned him, or undo the damage she had caused Elara.
Instead, he said, “You need to tell Detective Collins everything. Every document, every conversation, every person you contacted.”
“I will.”
“And you need to apologize to Elara yourself.”
“I will.”
He ended the call.
For a long time, he stood in the quiet apartment.
Then he returned to New York.
Elara met him in the library.
“What happened?”
He told her everything.
She listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she looked down at her hands.
“I don't know whether to hate her.”
“You don't have to decide today.”
“She used my mother's medical history.”
“Yes.”
“Even if she thought she was helping, she hurt us.”
“Yes.”
Elara drew a slow breath.
“I'm glad you told me.”
Lorenzo sat across from her.
“I nearly didn't.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to protect you from another betrayal.”
She shook her head.
“That's how people end up hiding things from each other. They call it protection until nobody can trust anybody.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
She studied him.
“Do you?”
“I am trying to.”
That evening, Isabella arrived at the residence with a folder of documents and no security detail.
She looked tired.
She looked frightened.
And for once, she did not try to explain herself before apologizing.
“Elara,” she said, “I hurt you. I believed I could force the truth into the open without considering what it would cost you. I was wrong.”
Elara held her gaze.
“Why should I believe you now?”
“You shouldn't have to. Not yet.”
Isabella placed the folder on the table.
“These are the original emails I sent to the journalist. They show exactly what I knew and when I knew it. Detective Collins can have everything.”
She stepped back.
“I don't expect forgiveness. I only wanted you to have the evidence.”
Elara opened the folder.
The emails confirmed Isabella's account. She had not deliberately worked with Shaw, but she had taken a reckless risk and exposed a vulnerable family to public attack.
It was not innocence.
It was not conspiracy.
It was a human mistake with serious consequences.
Elara closed the folder.
“Thank you for bringing this.”
Isabella nodded, eyes wet.
Then her phone rang.
She listened, and the color drained from her face.
“What is it?” Lorenzo asked.
May you like
She looked at her son.
“Your father has disappeared.”
