Chapter 11 - Building Something Better

Halcyon nearly broke under the scandal.
Instead of hiding from it, we rebuilt.
We created stronger whistleblower protections, independent vendor review, rotating audit teams, and tighter conflict-of-interest controls.
I became publicly visible for the first time.
I hated cameras.
I loved the work.
My father had built Halcyon to survive him.
I wanted to build it to survive me.
Brendan started over too.
Not at Halcyon.
I would not give him that shortcut.
He took a job with a mid-sized manufacturing company at less than half his former salary.
For the first time, he earned progress without his father's influence or my invisible help.
We developed a careful co-parenting relationship.
Grace adored him.
I never used her as punishment.
He never used her as leverage.
That was perhaps the healthiest thing we had ever done together.
Then I met Nathan Cole.
Nathan was a pediatric cardiac surgeon whose niece had spent time in the NICU with Grace.
He knew nothing about my marriage when we first spoke.
More importantly, he did not care about Halcyon.
Our first date lasted forty minutes because Grace developed a fever.
Nathan drove me home without complaining.
Our second date happened three weeks later.
Our third lasted five hours.
I felt something I had forgotten relationships could contain.
Ease.
No performance.
No hierarchy.
No need to shrink.
When Brendan learned I was dating someone, he became quiet.
Then he said:
“Is he good to you?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”

I knew that answer cost him something.
And because it did, I respected him more for giving it.
