Chapter 8 - The Breaking of the Ice

The banquet hall remained hushed for several long minutes, allowing the raw emotion of the moment to breathe. Slowly, the quiet was broken by a single pair of clapping hands. Owen stood up from the dais, applauding with gentle respect. Within seconds, Aunt Clara joined in, followed by Uncle Thomas, Jenna, Marcus, and soon the entire room rose in a standing ovation—not for spectacle, but for reconciliation and healing.

When we finally pulled apart, I wiped the tears from Mia's cheeks with a linen napkin. Her makeup was ruined, but for the first time in her life, her face looked genuinely soft, vulnerable, and real.

"I ruined your wedding," Mia whispered, looking down at her massive white gown in absolute horror. "Look at what I did. I walked in here like a monster... I tried to hurt you on the happiest day of your life..."

"You didn't ruin anything, Mia," I said gently, holding both of her hands in mine. "Today was supposed to be a celebration of love. And healing our family is the greatest gift this day could have ever given us."

Jenna stepped down from the platform, carrying a makeup pouch and a box of tissues. She knelt beside Mia, offering a warm, forgiving smile. "Come on, Mia. Let's go to the bridal suite. Let’s get you cleaned up, fix your hair, and get you ready for the party."

Mia looked at Jenna in disbelief, then back at me. "You... you want me to stay?"

"Of course I want you to stay," I laughed softly through my tears. "You're wearing a thirty-thousand-dollar custom designer ballgown. If you don't dance in it, Mom will haunt us both for wasting the insurance money."

A wet, genuine laugh broke through Mia’s tears—the first real, unrestrained laugh I had heard from her in years.

Jenna and Aunt Clara helped Mia gather the heavy layers of her tulle skirt, guiding her out of the ballroom toward the bridal suite. As they walked through the double doors, several family members reached out, gently squeezing Mia’s hand or offering comforting words. The judgment that had filled the room earlier had completely evaporated, replaced by deep empathy and understanding.

Owen walked down from the dais, wrapping his arm around my waist and kissing the top of my head. "You are the most incredible woman I have ever known, Lila."

"Mom gave us the roadmap, Owen," I whispered, leaning my head against his chest. "I just followed the directions."

"Well, Mrs. Vance," Owen smiled, wiping a stray tear from my cheek, "I believe the dinner is served, and after that, we have a dance floor waiting for two brides."
