Chapter 7 - The Hotel Where Ruby Began

The old hotel stood beyond the Strip where luxury turned into abandoned concrete.
Seven years earlier it had been called Belladonna House.
Now the sign was gone.
Windows boarded.
Pool empty.
Dust covering the lobby where Tessa and I had crossed paths after a charity casino event neither of us wanted to attend.
Marius had chosen nostalgia for cruelty.
I entered alone.
Federal agents watched remotely.
Nash hated every second.
Tessa waited two blocks away with Maddox’s backup team.
At least, that was the plan.
Marius stood inside the ballroom.
Callum beside him.
Three armed men at the doors.
My uncle looked older.
Callum looked frightened.
“You brought the documents?” Marius asked.
I held up a case.
“Yes.”
“Open it.”
I did.
Sealed trust packet.
Real.
Agents had photographed and secured legal duplicates.
Marius did not know.
“Sign the disclaimer.”
He pushed paperwork across a table.
It claimed Ruby was not my child and the DNA test had been fraudulent.
I laughed.
“That is your plan?”
“You sign. Tessa signs. Everything disappears.”
“Tessa isn’t here.”
“She will be.”
Callum shifted.
I noticed.
“You told him she was coming?”
Marius looked sharply at his son.
There.
Fracture.
Callum had not known.
“What did you promise Callum?” I asked.
“Shut up.”
“Did you tell him nobody gets hurt?”
Callum looked at his father.
“Marius?”
“Don’t.”
I smiled faintly.
“Your father told Tessa the same kind of thing seven years ago.”
Callum’s face changed.
Marius snapped, “The girl should never have existed.”
Every camera captured it.
I kept my voice calm.
“Ruby is six.”
“She is a liability.”
“She’s your family.”
“She’s a waitress’s bastard.”
Something in me wanted to cross the room.
Instead, I stayed still.
That was harder.
“Say it again.”
Marius smiled.
“You heard.”
“Yes.”
I wanted the recording clear.
Then a voice came from behind the ballroom.
“Enough.”
Tessa.
I turned.
My heart stopped.
“What are you doing?”
She stepped through a side entrance with Agent Maddox behind her.
The operation had accelerated.
Agents had discovered another armed man moving toward my position, forcing them inside early.
Marius pulled a gun.
Everything changed.
He grabbed Tessa before Maddox could clear the angle.
Arm around her.
Weapon near her side.
Callum went white.
“Dad!”
“Shut up!”
Tessa did not scream.
She looked at me.
Calm.
Terrified.
Both.
Marius said, “Documents.”
“They’re yours.”
“Sign.”
“I’ll sign.”
Tessa shook her head.
“No.”
“Tessa.”
“No.”
Marius tightened his grip.
“You sign too.”
She looked at him.
“Seven years ago, I was twenty-one and alone.”
Her voice trembled but did not break.
“You scared me into disappearing.”
“Good decision.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I’m done disappearing.”
Marius dragged her backward.
Agents moved outside.
Callum suddenly stepped toward his father.
“Let her go.”
Marius stared.
“What?”
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
“You think inheritance comes without consequences?”
Callum looked sick.
Apparently even spoiled men occasionally discover a line.
Marius pointed the gun slightly away from Tessa toward Callum.
Mistake.
Tessa drove her heel down onto his foot and twisted.
He lost balance.
I moved.
Crossed the distance.
Grabbed his wrist.
The gun fired upward.
Plaster burst from the ceiling.
No one was hit.
We struggled.
Marius struck my face.
I shoved him against the table.
Callum pulled Tessa away.
Marius reached for the gun on the floor.
I reached it first.
Everything stopped.
The barrel pointed at him.
For fifteen years, this was where stories about Dante Voss usually ended.
Someone threatened me.
Someone disappeared.
Marius looked almost relieved.
“There he is.”
I stared.
“The Ghost.”
My finger rested near the trigger.
He smiled.
“You can dress it up. Call federal agents. Play father. But you’re still Lucien’s son.”
Tessa whispered behind me.
“Dante.”
Ruby.
Her rules.
Never lie.
Don’t make Mommy cry.
And now, perhaps, a third rule.
No confusing answers.
I lowered the gun.
Marius’s smile disappeared.
“No.”
I stepped backward.
“I’m Ruby’s father.”
Federal agents flooded the ballroom.
Marius was tackled.
Handcuffed.
Alive.
Callum surrendered immediately.
Tessa looked at me.
Blood from my split lip tasted metallic.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
Then slapped me.
Hard.
Every agent froze.
I stared.
“What was that?”
“For telling me you would sign.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You cannot surrender Ruby’s rights to save me.”
“I was lying to a kidnapper.”
She paused.
“Fine.”
Then she kissed me.
Right there.
Federal agents.
Nash entering.
Callum staring.
Marius swearing from the floor.
Seven years collapsed into one second.
I touched her cheek.
Carefully.
When she pulled back, she whispered:
“That doesn’t erase seven years.”
“I know.”
“But it might earn you tomorrow.”
That was enough.
Then Tessa coughed.
Once.
Twice.
Her face changed.
She reached for the wall.
I caught her.
“Tessa?”
“I can’t…”
Her breathing became shallow.
Agent Maddox called medical support.
I carried Tessa outside.
An ambulance raced toward us.
She clutched my jacket.
“Ruby.”
“She’s safe.”
“Don’t let her see me like this.”
“No.”
“Dante.”
I looked down.
“I’m scared.”
“So am I.”
Her oxygen saturation dropped.
Paramedics moved quickly.
The stress had triggered a severe pulmonary crisis on top of already damaged lungs.
By the time we reached the hospital, doctors were discussing emergency transplant listing.
Marius was finally in custody.
Ruby’s inheritance was protected.
Our enemies were collapsing.
None of it mattered.
May you like
Because once again, I stood outside a hospital room while somebody I loved struggled to breathe.
And for all my money and power, I could do nothing except wait.
