Chapter 1 - The Red Panel at TwilightThe locks clicked at the same time.

Front door. Garage. Patio. Even the windows.

I stood in the middle of our living room staring at the glowing wall panel while my husband, Grant, watched me through the security camera from his phone.

Then his voice came through the ceiling speaker.

“No one will believe a crazy wife, Claire.”

Behind him, I heard a woman laugh. Vanessa. His mistress.

Grant had changed into his tuxedo for the Coastal Vision Gala, the biggest investor event of the year for his medical technology company. Less than an hour earlier, he had taken my phone, disabled my key code, and told his mother and sister to start recording.

Not him. Me.

His mother, Diane, stood outside the glass patio door holding up her phone. “Claire, stop screaming,” she called sweetly. “You’re frightening everyone.”

“I’m not screaming.”

“See?” Grant’s sister whispered loudly from behind the camera. “She doesn’t even realize what she’s doing.”

That was when I understood. They weren’t just locking me in. They were building evidence. For months, Grant had been telling friends I was unstable. Forgetful. Paranoid. Emotionally unpredictable. Tonight, he planned to make it official.

If I fought the doors, they would film me. If I broke a window, they would call the police. If I begged, they would call me hysterical. And while his family manufactured a breakdown, Grant would walk into the Coastal Vision Gala with Vanessa on his arm and convince the board that his troublesome wife needed “medical supervision.”

He thought I was trapped. So I smiled.

Grant noticed. His expression changed. “Why are you smiling?”

I looked directly into the security camera. “Because you forgot who built the part of your company no investor is allowed to see.”

Silence. Then Grant’s face went pale. Because buried beneath his billion-dollar medical empire was a private control structure only three people knew existed. Two were dead. And the third was me.

Grant stopped laughing. “Claire,” he said slowly. “What did you do?”

I walked toward the wall panel. And for the first time that night, every camera in the house went black.
