Chapter 4 - CRESTVIEW'S GAMBIT

Marcus arrived within twenty minutes, his expression carefully neutral as he settled into the SUV beside me, having verified Richard Alvarez's legitimate position within Crestview Partners' senior leadership through several urgent phone calls during his drive across downtown Minneapolis.
"Mr. Alvarez," Marcus said formally, extending his hand despite obvious professional caution, "I appreciate your discretion in approaching my client, though I'll need considerably more transparency regarding exactly what information prompted Crestview's sudden interest in this matter."
Richard nodded, seemingly expecting this exact response. "Completely reasonable. Approximately three hours ago, our firm's general counsel received an anonymous email containing partial transcripts of recorded conversations describing SwiftFreight's financial manipulation, specifically mentioning shell companies and artificially depressed asset valuations designed to secure favorable investment terms."
"Who sent this anonymous email?" Marcus asked sharply.
"We don't know definitively," Richard admitted. "Though our technical team traced its origin to an IP address connected to the FBI's Minneapolis field office, suggesting someone within federal law enforcement deliberately leaked partial information, possibly hoping to prompt exactly this kind of private sector intervention alongside continuing federal investigation."
I glanced at Marcus, uncertain whether Agent Chen himself might have orchestrated this leak, though such action would represent highly unusual, potentially problematic federal investigative procedure.
"Regardless of the leak's origin," Marcus said carefully, "my client isn't prepared to discuss specific evidence details without appropriate legal protections regarding her cooperation with your firm."
"Completely understood," Richard replied. "Which is precisely why I've arranged for Crestview's general counsel to join us shortly, prepared to discuss formal witness protection and financial compensation for Mrs. Pierce's cooperation, assuming her evidence proves as significant as our compliance department suspects."
"Financial compensation?" I asked, surprised by this unexpected element.
"Whistleblower protections under federal securities law," Richard explained, "often include substantial financial rewards for individuals who provide information leading to successful fraud prosecution, particularly cases involving securities fraud exceeding one million dollars in investor harm. Given the scale of Crestview's pending 3.2-billion-dollar investment, appropriate whistleblower compensation could prove considerably significant."
This revelation added an entirely unexpected dimension to my circumstances, transforming my initial goal of simple survival and dignified divorce into potential substantial financial independence, assuming Gavin's fraud allegations proved accurate and my cooperation led to successful prosecution.
Over the following hour, Crestview's general counsel, a sharp, efficient woman named Patricia Nakamura, arrived to formally discuss legal protections and compensation structures for my continued cooperation, while simultaneously confirming their firm's intention to immediately halt the scheduled SwiftFreight investment pending thorough independent verification of the fraud allegations.
"We're prepared to offer comprehensive legal representation, physical security protection, and substantial financial compensation," Patricia explained, "in exchange for your complete cooperation regarding evidence you've gathered, plus formal testimony should this matter proceed to federal prosecution."
Marcus reviewed the proposed agreement carefully, negotiating several additional protections regarding my safety and financial security throughout what promised to become an extended, complicated legal process.
"There's something else you should know," I said finally, once the formal negotiations had largely concluded. "Gavin's sister Bridget and her husband Mason are currently removing my remaining belongings from our penthouse. They might inadvertently destroy or conceal additional evidence if they're not stopped promptly."
Richard and Patricia exchanged meaningful glances. "We can arrange for federal agents to secure that location immediately," Richard said, "assuming Agent Chen agrees this represents appropriate investigative action given current circumstances."
A quick phone call to Agent Chen confirmed exactly this necessity, federal agents already preparing to execute a search warrant at Gavin's penthouse based on the substantial evidence I'd already provided, hoping to secure any additional documentation before Gavin's family could successfully destroy incriminating financial records.
That evening, as I finally settled into a considerably more secure hotel suite arranged through Crestview's protective custody arrangement, Marcus updated me on the federal search warrant's initial results.
"They found extensive documentation," he reported, genuine excitement evident despite his typically composed professional demeanor. "Physical financial records that Mason apparently hadn't yet digitized or properly concealed, detailed spreadsheets outlining the exact shell company structure used to manipulate SwiftFreight's reported assets."
"What about Gavin?" I asked. "Was he there during the search?"
"He was," Marcus confirmed. "Agent Chen reports Gavin appeared genuinely shocked by the search warrant's execution, suggesting he might not have fully understood the extent of his own brother-in-law's fraudulent activities, though his direct involvement in threatening you and coercing your divorce signature remains separately, clearly documented."
This information provided small, complicated comfort—understanding that Gavin's fraud might have been somewhat separate from his abusive treatment toward me, though his willingness to physically harm me while pursuing his business ambitions remained entirely, unforgivably his own choice regardless of Mason's additional financial manipulation.
"What happens next?" I asked, exhaustion finally overwhelming my earlier adrenaline-fueled energy.
"Tomorrow," Marcus said, "federal prosecutors will likely coordinate simultaneous action—formal charges against Mason for securities fraud, protective orders against Gavin for witness intimidation and domestic violence, and probably immediate suspension of SwiftFreight's pending Crestview investment pending thorough independent audit."
I nodded slowly, understanding that tomorrow would likely prove even more overwhelming than the chaotic, transformative day I'd just experienced.

"Get some rest, Sabrina," Marcus said gently, recognizing my obvious exhaustion. "Tomorrow, everything changes considerably, and you'll need your strength for whatever complicated proceedings follow."
I nodded, finally allowing myself to collapse into genuine rest, protected by federal security and Crestview's considerable resources, hoping desperately that tomorrow's promised transformation would ultimately justify the painful, frightening journey that had brought me to this unexpected, precarious position.
