Chapter 4 - UNDER THE RADAR

he Coronado naval base at midnight was a labyrinth of shadows, illuminated only by the amber
glow of perimeter security lights.
While Holt and his inner circle spent the evening panic-deleting files and scrambling to cover their
tracks, I sat in a secluded office in the base’s logistics wing. Beside me was Petty Officer Sarah Miller, a
twenty-four-year-old supply clerk who had spent the last hour trembling in fear of being seen with
me.
“Ma’am, if Commander Holt finds out I talked to you, I’m done,“ Miller whispered, her eyes
constantly darting to the locked office door. “My brother is a Marine. I wanted a career in this Navy.
But they... they make it impossible to stay clean.“
“Miller, look at me,“ I said, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. “Look at my uniform. I represent
the Inspector General. As of this moment, you are under federal whistleblower protection. Anything
you tell me is completely off the record until we secure formal indictments. Nobody is touching your
career. I promise you.“
She took a deep, shaky breath, wiping a tear from her cheek. “It started about eighteen months
ago. We were receiving shipments of advanced thermal scopes and tactical communication headsets.
But the manifests were being altered manually in the database. The system would show ten units
arrived, but only six would actually be logged into the armory.“
“Who was approving the manual overrides?“ I asked, my fingers hovering over my laptop
keyboard.
“Commander Holt’s personal digital signature was on every single override,“ Miller said, pulling a
small, encrypted USB drive from her pocket and sliding it across the desk. “I copied the raw database
logs before they could run the scrub programs tonight. It shows over four million dollars in tactical
equipment simply... vanishing.“
“Where was the equipment being shipped?“
“The local destination was a private warehouse in Chula Vista,“ she whispered. “But the billing
codes are linked to an international shipping company called Meridian Global. Ma’am, Meridian is a
known contractor for private maritime security firms operating in high-risk zones. They aren’t
buying surplus—they are buying active US Navy tactical gear.“
“And the money?“ I queried, examining the digital files as they loaded onto my screen. “A logistics
commander doesn’t have the clearance to authorize international shipments of controlled military
technology without flagging the Defense Logistics Agency.“
“They don’t,“ Miller agreed, her voice dropping even lower. “The export licenses were signed off by
a flag officer’s digital credential. I couldn’t decrypt the signature, but the clearance level required is
three stars.“
The Scars of Honor: Takedown at Coronado 8
My heart grew cold. A three-star admiral.
That meant this wasn’t just a localized theft ring at Coronado. The rot went all the way to the
Pentagon. Holt and Mercer were nothing but low-level street thugs running a pipeline for a massive,
corrupt network.
“You did the right thing, Miller,“ I said, securing the USB drive in my inner pocket. “Go back to your
barracks. Do not speak to anyone. If Holt or Mercer so much as look at you, you call my direct line
immediately.“
As she slipped out of the room, I stared at the glowing screen. The trap was set, but the prey was
much larger than I had ever anticipated.
