Chapter 10 - The Family TreeOne year later.

The summer sun shone golden and warm over the Cascade Mountains.

The fifty acres of Harmon family timberland had been officially deeded as the Harmon Ancient Tree Sanctuary & Family Trust, protected forever from commercial development.

Near the base of the four-hundred-year-old Douglas fir, a new, beautiful timber lodge had been constructed—built by Harold, Richard, Michael, Sarah, Catherine, and David working together every weekend throughout the spring.

Over fifty people—local mountain families, grandchildren, and friends—gathered in the sunny clearing for a grand Sunday feast.

A long wooden table groaned under the weight of Elaine’s roasted vegetables, fresh sourdough bread, and berry pies.

Every Sunday, without fail, all five children drove up the mountain to spend the day with their parents. They chopped wood, tended the garden, played music by the river, and listened to Harold’s stories around the hearth.

Harold stood at the head of the long table, raising his mug of apple cider to the smiling faces of his children and grandchildren.

Standing beside him was Elaine, her hand wrapped tightly in his, her face glowing with health, happiness, and profound peace.

“Fifty years ago,” Harold spoke into the warm summer breeze, his voice rich with emotion, “I thought a home was built of bricks and mortgages. But I learned that a real home is built of forgiveness, love, and roots that run deep enough to survive any storm.”

The family erupted into warm, thunderous applause and cheers under the canopy of ancient trees.

The silence of Sunday was gone forever. The lost had returned home, the greedy had found their true wealth, and beneath the roots of the giant tree, an unbroken legacy of love, family, and grace was born to flourish for generations to come.
