Chapter 2 - Echoes of the DeadThe rainfall against the panoramic windows of the safehouse penthouse sounded like thrown gravel. Sorrel was fast asleep in the master bedroom, her ankle wrapped in soothing ointment and clean bandages, guarded by two elite private security contractors Hadrian had hired within an hour of leaving his estate.

In the study, Hadrian poured two fingers of straight bourbon, his hands visibly shaking for the first time in a decade. His phone buzzed continuously on the mahogany desk—calls from Vanessa’s frantic father, alerts from his PR team, and frantic text messages from media outlets demanding a statement about the sudden leak of the audio clip.

He ignored them all. Instead, he opened a encrypted file on his laptop labeled PROJECT HELENA.

Four years ago, his wife, Helena Vance, had vanished during a private yacht expedition off the coast of Amalfi. The authorities found no body, only a blood-stained life vest and a shattered hull. Hadrian had nearly lost his mind searching for her, eventually forced to declare her legally dead to protect their asset portfolio from corporate raiders.

Now, a single text message appeared on his secure screen from an unknown number:

“She didn’t lie to the girl, Vance. Helena is alive. And if you want her back, you’ll surrender the Vance Tech shares to Vanessa’s father by midnight.”

Hadrian’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth clicked. The abuse of his daughter hadn't just been a display of sadistic cruelty; it was a deliberate tactic to break Sorrel's spirit and distract Hadrian the moment he returned home.

Suddenly, the penthouse lights flickered and died.

The hum of the HVAC system shut down, plunging the apartment into pitch blackness. Down the hall, the heavy metallic click of the safety locks disengaging rang out like gunshot reports.

Hadrian pulled a suppressed sidearm from his shoulder holster, moving silently through the shadows toward Sorrel’s room. Before he could reach the door, the thick glass of the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows shattered violently.

Two men dressed in tactical gear swung through the falling shards, flashbangs detonate with a deafening CRACK.

Blinded and disoriented, Hadrian fired blind into the smoke, hearing a groan as one shot found its target. But a heavy boot slammed into his ribs, throwing him against the wall.

"Grab the kid!" a voice barked through a radio scrambler.

Hadrian pushed through the agonizing pain in his ribs, lunging forward into the smoke. He grabbed the operative by the throat, slamming him into the kitchen island until the man went limp. But when the smoke cleared a second later, the bedroom door stood wide open.

The bed was empty. Sorrel was gone.

Left on the pillow was a single item: an old silver locket containing a photograph of Helena—freshly wiped of blood, but smelling faintly of sea salt and salt water.
